Letter From Parker
Friends
parker picsSnow, sleet, mud, ice, mud, slop, rain, mud, nasty dirty boots, gooey mud, soggy horse poop, did I mention mud? Aaaah, what a lovely winter we've enjoyed!  And enjoy we have. In spite of the mess, just ask any of our barn girls who've spent school-less days at the barn brushing, and scooping, and squishing in mud and fun! Nothing better than sledding behind Mr. Cash's 4-wheeler! Whooopeeee!!!
Among the happy news, since our last e-mail we've:
  • enjoyed our first hugely-successful winter tournament (click here for results!)
  • hosted 14 women for an Adult Weekend Riding Extravaganza (my legs are still sore from chasing them!),
  • welcomed several new members to our Academy team
  • cheered longtime Lovell's Little Bits Leader Lauren Riggins who was elected President of ASAC
  • had CLS Show and Academy Riders winning National and Statewide awards
  • (maybe biggest of all) finalized plans to open our long-awaited second riding academy! (See all the exciting details below!)

Whew, I'd like to take a breather. But, alas, that will have to wait! This weekend, we head to the February Winter Tournament in Charlotte, where we'll take 28 riders! And then, we'll blink our eyes and it will be time for the next Little Bits meeting, the CLS Kick-off Show Season Parties, and then Show Season - all in about 4 weeks! (Anybody got a Snickers bar? I can feel a stress-induced eating binge coming on!)

Oh yes -- don't forget to mark your calendars for some exciting upcoming events (more information and ways to register below):
  • Sunday, March 14 - Our first ANNUAL "Spring Fling" fence painting, bulb planting, landscaping and barn cleaning followed by a big 'ol yummy cookout! Everyone's invited.
  • July and August - Summer Camps - REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!
  • Saturday, April 3 -Lovell's Little Bits Spring Charity Fun Show, held in conjunction with the Oak Ridge Horse Show.
  • Saturday, May 1 - Sign up for the Cash Lovell Race for the Cure Team by e-mailing Sonya Marion at sonyahmarion@bellsouth.net
  • Sunday, Feb. 28 and Sunday, March 7 - Red Cross CPR and First Aid training with all the members of the CLS Staff, held at the barn. (See below to sign up!)
So much going on!  So much to be thankful for and excited about. As always, I want to thank you for being such a special part of the Cash Lovell family!  See you at the barn!

CLS to Open a New Riding Location in Oak Ridge, N.C. - near Greensboro
cash lovell logoWe're proud to announce the opening of a second CLS Riding Academy. In April, we will begin a small riding lesson program in Oak Ridge, NC. We'll partner with Jim and Sam Burnette of Leyland Riding and Driving Center. The Burnette's own a gorgeous 75-acre horse facility, which includes a large covered indoor riding arena.
"This has been a dream of ours for many, many years," says Parker Lovell. "Our joy, one of our biggest reasons for being, is to spread the magic and power of horses. We've looked into opening second locations in Raleigh, Charlotte and Asheville in recent years, but it never felt right. Recently, we were led to Oak Ridge, which is only about 25 minutes from here. The facility, the wonderful people we're partnering with, our incredible new instructor, Kris Berger, a World Champion Saddlebred rider and instructor who lives in Oak Ridge, the timing, everything just seemed to work for Oak Ridge. And we couldn't be more excited, or more overjoyed by the response we've already received."

Parker says that for Cash Lovell customers in the family's bedrock Winston-Salem location, there will be no changes. No instructors are moving to Oak Ridge, no horses are leaving. Cash and Parker will still be home-based, as always, out of Winston-Salem. And the American Saddlebred show horses and show horse training, for which Cash is internationally-known, will remain with Cash in Winston, under his daily tutelage.

"The main difference will be the addition of staff in Oak Ridge, and the addition of students who may eventually attend our Fun Shows or own show horses that are in training in Winston-Salem," said Parker. "This is a natural next step for us in our resolve to be the international leader in the Saddlebred Show Horse/Saddleseat Academy sport."

Lessons are scheduled to begin in Oak Ridge in early April 2010.

CLS Show Rider Lauren Riggins Elected ASAC President and Receives Youth Sportsmanship Award
laurenShe may be 16 years old, but this young lady shows poise, maturity and determination that belie her age. And boy is she headed asac logofor big things in this life. At the recent American Saddlebred Association of the Carolinas (ASAC )convention in Charlotte, our very own Lauren Riggins -- who began riding at CLS when she was seven -- was elected President of the statewide organization's youth.  Lauren also received the prestigious 2009 Youth Sportsmanship Award.

We asked Lauren to write a little something for this newsletter and here's what she had to say about her new role:

"This year I have been given the chance to be the 2010 ASAC youth president, which I see as a real honor. To me it means that all the kids have put faith in me that I will be able to make 2010 a great year for them.  I sure hope I meet that goal.

I have three things that I want to focus on this year:
a. Get everyone involved in the youth group
b. Give riders an opportunity to meet other kids from all over the Carolinas that share the love of Saddlebred horses
c. Work to raise money, not only for our youth events, but expand our fundraising efforts to raise money for equine charities such as the Saddlebred Rescue.

I hope that 2010 is a great year for the ASAC youth, and I'm most definitely looking forward to working with my fellow ASAC youth officers and board and meeting other young people who love Saddlebreds like I do."

We couldn't be more proud of you Lauren. You are an incredible role model for us all!

Women's Weekend Riding Extravaganza a Big Success!
adult riding groupIt might have been the chair yoga. Maybe it was the chair massages, or the hours on horseback, or the time we spent bearing our souls about what horses bring to our lives. But whatever the catalyst, for one group of women who gathered at CLS for a weekend of riding and fun in February, we bonded through our laughter, joy and sore exhaustion.

Thank you to the 14 ladies who took time out from your busy lives to spend a laughter-filled weekend on horseback. Our fearless instructor was the inimitable Sheri Brandl of back massageOconomowoc, WI, supported by beloved CLS instructor Kathryn Rodosky. The incredible food, and oh my heavens was it scrumptious! was provided by Anita Wright of The Carving Board and Melanie Riggins (whose to-die-for breakfast casserole and liquid reinforcements were huge hits!). Other fortifications were provided by Beringer Wines  . . . but that's another story. We also thank Cash Lovell himself for providing amazing insights into the intriguing world of Saddlebred Show Horses that few get the witness firsthand from a master.

women's yogaThank you ladies for sharing your precious free time with us. We hope you enjoyed it half as much as we did! And we're looking forward to the next sojourn from real life. Watch your CLS e-newsletters for the next Adult Riding Camp Weekend Extravaganza!

New in Our Newsletters and our Website:  Little Buttons and ON-LINE REGISTRATION!
Note from Ellen (VP of online-ventures)

We're always trying to keep up with technology around here, so this month you're going to see something new:  little blue buttons.

new buttons

Okay, so little blue buttons aren't all that high-tech, but what's behind them is!  Click a little blue button to go to an on-line registration page where you can sign up for events, horse shows, summer camps, Little Bits meetings and more. For horse shows and other events with a fee, you can tell us how you'd like to make your payment. For regular CLS riders, you can simply click "Pay at the Door" and we'll know to charge your CLS house account.  Or, if you want to use a credit card, you can click "Pay with PayPal" -- and no, you do not need a PayPal account. It's very easy.

Why do we need on-line registration and little blue buttons?  Truth is, there's a lot going on at CLS!  In fact, this month alone, there are FOURTEEN different events coming up this spring and summer! So we're hoping on-line registration will make life easier for our Moms and Dads, and help us stay more organized!

If you have "little blue button phobia", no worries, you can still e-mail your plans to Parker at parker@cashlovellstables.com and she will sign you up manually.

Hope this is easy and convenient for everyone. If you have any questions or just want to share your thought on our new on-line registration process, please feel free to e-mail me at ellenbassett@me.com. Thanks so much!

FYI: Protect Your Cell Phone Number!
Our friend and long-time saddleseat rider KC Kish, has informed us that this month all cell phone numbers will be released to telemarketers.

If you don't want 10,000 telemarketers calling your cell phone, apparently you simply call the following number from your cell phone:
888-382-1222.

It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five (5) years. You must call from the cell phone number you want to have blocked. You cannot call from a different phone number.

Thanks KC!

Maybe She Was Raised in a Barn
Reflections on the Good Life
by Parker Lovell

There are days when I get tired and overwhelmed. And there are moments when I doubt if giving up my career as a newspaper reporter was wise. But I'm very, very blessed that my moments of doubt are few. And that's mainly because of the members of my CLS barn family.

An example: Out of the blue, I and other CLS staffers received the following e-mail recently from Sarah McAuley, whose girls' Sadie and Stella, ride at CLS. It read, "I could not ask for a better group of role models for them.  Each of you is strong, kind, forgiving, fun-loving, harder working than about anyone I know and most of all, generous with your guidance and love.  I am a big believer in the fact that the more love someone receives, the more they have to give in return.  My girls' bucket of love gets filled more and more each week by you wonderful women.  Even when they are tired and grumpy and maybe even a bit whiney, you give and give.  They are so lucky to have you all in their lives.  I will never be able to return this gift so I will try and remember to thank you over and over."

What I told Sarah, and what I hope each of you know, is that there are no thanks expected or needed. Being part of your and your children's amazing lives is the gift of a lifetime.

It's our reason for being.
