Friends
Well, January is off to a wild start, and we're getting so excited about the first tournament of the year! Good luck to all of our riders -- especially those who will be entering the show ring for the first time! Our new 2010 Academy Team is forming right now and we invite all those who will be showing this year, or think you might, to join us on Friday night, February 5th (this is the night before the February Tournament!). We'll have hair and clothing demonstrations, show videos and more!
As we start off the new year, I want to stop and give thanks for the last year. Thank you to each and every one of you for making Cash Lovell Stables such a warm and happy place. And thank you for allowing my family to live our dream. Without you, we couldn't be. Every year, our gift to our customers is our CLS Holiday Party, and this year's party I do believe was the best ever! Watch for fun pictures of our now infamous mechanical bull, huge blowup jumpies and slides, special recognitions and much more! We loved Caroline's expression when she was surprised with her new horse, Philosopher, from her grandmother!
I'm particularly proud of the CLS Academy National Riders who adopted a school in Afghanistan last year, and dedicated their rides at Nationals to the girls in this faraway place. Our children assembled 110 bookbags to send to Afghan children, and they delivered the bags to Washington, D.C. Big thank you to Nancy Hawley whose international contacts made this possible. (Read all about our project and trip below). Thank you to Doug Bassett for coordinating the tours all over Washington and Ray Hawley for providing comic relief. I am still apologizing for the movie selections on the bus, which included movies about aliens taking over the earth and some other little gem about children eating worms. But taking a lead from Vegas, I'll just say, "Whatever happened on the bus, stays on the bus." Address all parental complaints to Ray Hawley. . . We love you Ray!
Lots of upcoming events for you to sign-up for in the upcoming months including the second Winter Tournament and (NEW!) CPR and First-Aid Certification classes to be held right here at Cash Lovell. Our instructors and staff will be taking these two classes, and we hope you'll come take them with us (more on that below too).
We are now on Twitter, Facebook and spending half the day in cyberworld ... or whatever it's called. Our lounge now has free wi-fi for Moms and Dads who need to get a little work done while the kids are riding. And with all that said, there's no better way to get away from computers and connect with animals and children -- than right here at the barn. Parker |
CLS Academy Nationals Riders visit Afghan Embassy
with 110 Backpacks for School Girls |
Some members of the Academy Nationals Team and their families recently took an incredible trip to Washington, D.C. as part of an international service project coordinated by Nancy Hawley and Parker. CLS riders were invited to a special tea at the Embassy of Afghanistan to meet Shamin Jawad, wife of the Ambassador to Afghanistan. They boarded a bus with bus driver extraordinaire Marty; visited the White House and had some incredible adventures along the way. Thought you might like to see the letter that Parker sent to the editor of the Winston-Salem Journal.
January 19, 2010

Cash Lovell Stables & Riding Academy recently contacted U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx's office to assist us in planning a trip for our youth club to Washington, D.C. Our young riders adopted a school in Afghanistan last year. They were delivering to the Afghan Embassy school supplies, including 110 book bags for Afghan girls.
Our trip was planned hurriedly, as we didn't receive the invitation to deliver the goods personally to the Afghan Embassy until a few weeks ago. Congresswoman Foxx's staffers couldn't have worked harder or more expeditiously to help us. With their assistance, during the trip our children received a guided tour of The White House, a guided tour of the U.S. Capitol, and tickets to the Washington Monument.
It turned into the trip of a lifetime. A group of children, ages 6 - 12, from Winston-Salem experienced the awe-inspiring U.S. Capitol. And they learned about the lives of Afghan girls, who after years of oppression under Taliban rule, will be able to attend school once again. Through their gifts, 12 and 13 year old Afghan girls will enter first grade with pencils, notebooks, and a backpack. Small offerings, delivered with love and hope from North Carolina.
Sincerely,
Parker Lovell

Winner of the First Annual CLS Writing Contest |
The winner of our very first CLS writing contest is Caroline Skye Rice. Caroline is a very bright 6-year-old who lives with her family in Clemmons, NC. She is in the First Grade at Riverwood Academy. Her favorite pasttimes are playing with baby brother Emmanuel, and writing short stories. She loves singing, dancing, riding horses and playdates with her Daddy. Caroline's winning entry will be published in Forsyth Family magazine. This is her second published story!
Caroline's Winning Story:
All the trainers and horseback riding teachers went to Africa for a Safari vacation. They left CC, Turbo, Clifford, JJ, Skyhawk, Katy, Jesse and Eddie back at the stable while they were gone. While the teachers were away, the horses got together and unlatched the gate. Soon, all the horses were out playing in the field.
That afternoon, Caroline arrived to visit the stable. It was time for her lesson. She even brought an apple for her favorite horse, Turbo. She wondered where all of the horses were. Caroline soon began to daydream that she and the horses were in Africa, too. She saw the horses. They were all on a safari! They saw BIG elephants with long trunks. Lions. Strange birds and zebras that looked like horses with painted stripes! WOW!!! Then one of the horses neighed "Neigh!!!" And "poof", just like that, Caroline was back at the stable. Turbo and his best friend CC were eating leaves off the saplings in the field. Some of the horses saw a bee hive -- AAAAH! A bee stung one of the horses. Ms. Parker and Ms. Candace ran out and swatted the bees. Then thy put a tea bag on the bee sting. All the trainers were now back at the stable, and it was time for all of the horses to go inside. They were all hungry and tired from playing anyway. For dinner, the horses ate oats, carrots, sugar cubes, water and hay. They had a very good time! Soon, Caroline's time at the stable was over. "Bye-Bye," said Caroline to all of her horsey friends. What a nice day.

Caroline and Philospher |
One young girl had an even bigger smile than anyone else at the Cash Lovell Stables Christmas party this year. And that was, of course, Caroline Anderson just after her family surprised her with her new horse Philosopher! We loved that Caroline had just written on Facebook, "Wonder who's getting a horse on this year. Does anyone know?" So this was great surprise for one lucky young lady.
Good luck Caroline and Philosopher in the 2010 show season! |
Are You Dreaming of Buying a Horse? |

Why Women Should Run the World
Some Thoughts (and Thanks) from Parker |
CLS Moms could - and should - run the world. Here are just a few examples of why.
CLS Mom Ellen Bassett taught herself how to create websites, and then created the new CLS website. If you haven't already seen it, please go there NOW! She's brilliant. And our website is fantastic!
CLS Mom Nancy Hawley, through her international network of women leaders, led Lovell's Little Bits members on a life-changing visit to the Afghan Embassy in Washington last week. See the story below for details.
CLS Mom Dr. Medge Owen is in Ghana again this month teaching safe child birthing practices. The organization she founded, Kybele, is an international humanitarian organization dedicated to improving childbirth conditions worldwide.
CLS Mom Kim Stewart is a mother of six. She showed up at the CLS office last week with pages of ideas for plans for the Little Bits this year - and she then volunteered to make them happen!
CLS Mom Amy Elliott battled a vicious form of virtually unknown cancer - but it wasn't unknown for long. Amy soon had secured a spot on a NASCAR race car to raise awareness and research money. Ever tried to do that in your spare time?
I've on occasion been made fun of by naysayers for "wanting to save the world." I always retort, "Thanks for the compliment. I believe I will." And I know just the group of women I want by my side.
-- Parker |
Join us on Twitter and Facebook! |
Yes, we've gone high-tech around here! We're now Twittering and Tweeting on Twitter most every day! If you're not a member of Twitter, you can join for free and follow what's happening at the barn. You can also see our "Twitter feed" on the home page of our new website (in the blue box in the middle).
Join us on Facebook too and see some up-to-the-minute pictures from life at the barn. We have a Facebook area on our website too -- look on the "News and Events" page. We can even do mobile uploads from horse events! |
New Vending Machines! |

Yes, Cash's new vending machines have caused just about as much commotion around the barn as anything we've ever done! We do have new vending machines with soft drinks and healthy(ish) snacks (we're trying). We're also in the process of getting a smaller fridge for water which is by far the healthiest choice of all! To all of those who secretly loved that cranky old vending machine that has now been replaced with the newer, spiffier models, don't worry: That old vending machine isn't being sent out to pasture -- we'll think of something for it! |
Our Shutterfly Picture Site |
To access our picture site, click here. Thanks to Brian Marion and our other excellent photographers you can see some fantastic pictures from most of our summer and fall events.
Please feel free to put your own pictures up on Shutterfly. We're putting some up on Facebook too!
