A Note from Parker -- 7.3.09 I'm tripping over empty icy pop wrappers by the hundreds. I smell fly spray - and stinky barn children. I'm getting used to stepping on drippy wet bathing suits on the bathroom floor. It must be summer! And what an exciting one it's shaping up to be at CLS! We have big, exciting plans to announce:
CLS has just announced it will hold an International Competition with Team Morgan, a group of the top junior riders in both South Africa and the United States. This is quite a coup for a private barn. See important details below about how you can participate.
- We're hosting our first ever Adult Horse Camp, Friday - Sunday, July 24th - July 26th. Check out the details below!
- The retirement party for Mr. Buttons, the World's Greatest School Horse is this Friday night, July 3rd. This will be a GINORMOUS CELEBRATION for our beloved friend and we want you to join us.
- Cynthia Kelly, a writer from the renowned Saddle & Bridle magazine has been at the barn recently preparing a story on the Lovell Family. So that has been very exciting!
- Ellen Beard visited CLS in June to work with our equitation riders.
- Two of our longtime Little Bits, Chris Hawley and Chloe Marion (the reigning National Academy Grand Champion) both have new show horses! Chris and Chloe, we are so happy for you!
- We're now on Facebook!
And that's just the beginning of our great news and plans. Thanks for reading our newsletter - and for being part of the CLS Family! Enjoy this amazing summer with our even more amazing kids. Have a wonderful 4th of July! See you at the barn!

Mr. Buttons Retirement Party
Friday, July 3rd
6:00 to 7:30 pm |
Mr. Buttons Retires! Don't Miss His Going Away Party!! On Friday evening, July 3, 2009, the most famous pony in Forsyth and surrounding counties, Mr. Buttons, will retire to a green pasture at Mr. Wallace and Ms. Susan's farm. But before he goes frolicking through the fields, Mr. Buttons will be honored in high style at a big ol' CLS Party! So please, Friday night from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, bring your favorite Buttons pictures and stories and join us in the CLS arena! Come ready to celebrate this wonderful pony, and his immeasurable contributions to our barn and our entire sport. We'll eat pizza, and cake, and apples . . . and carrots . . . and yes, peppermints galore! If you're interested in making a small donation to the Little Bits Youth Club in honor of Buttons, we intend to make an equine rescue donation in Buttons' name. We've already collected $60 from one of Buttons' adult fans. She never rode Buttons herself, but she said that watching him teach the children was the highlight of her barn visits!

Internation Invitational Riding Competition at CLS in August - |
Team Morgan, the international competitive team for the Morgan horse industry, will hold an upcoming competition at CLS. This will mark the first time that a private saddleseat training barn in the Southeastern United States has hosted such an event. "I couldn't think of a better place to bring this amazing team of South African saddleseat riders," said Cindy Mugnier, president of the Amercan Morgan Horse Association, and a Team Morgan coach, in a recent interview. "The South African Team will be in the United States to watch the World's Grand Championship Horse Show in Louisville. Cash Lovell's reputation for excellence in the sport of show horses, its expansive indoor facilities, and large team of nice lesson horses makes it the ideal locale for this groundbreaking event." The event will be held August 15 - 18, 2009 at CLS. Three teams will compete: a U.S. Team, a South African Team, and a CLS Team. The CLS team will be comprised of 7 riders (6 team members, plus an alternate). These riders will be chosen by Coach Mugnier and the CLS staff during the barn's Show Rider Camp, held the week of August 3rd. Riders who are not attending the camp will not be eligible. All CLS family members and friends are invited to attend the competition. And many will be asked to help the event as volunteers. Please contact Ms. Charlene at parklv9@aol.com if you would like to be included on the list of volunteers. Details to come in the days and weeks ahead, as our plans come together. This is one of the most exciting events in the storied history of our great barn. We hope you'll be part of it! Team Morgan is a similar organization to the Saddle Seat Equitation World Cup Team. Both organizations promote Saddle Seat riding internationally, and provide opportunities for top riders in each breed of Saddle Seat riding to compete at the international level. Often called the "Olympics of the Sport of Show Horses", these elite competitions are highly competitive and highly useful in bringing international awareness and attention to ours, the most rigorous, precise and elegant seat of riding. |

Help Cheer on Our Show Riders in the Lexington Jr. League Show |
The CLS Show Riders head to the famous Red Mile Track in Lexington, KY - and you can watch them via the show's webcast! The Lexington Jr. League Horse Show is one of the sport's oldest and most elegant horse show venues. Held each year on the historic Red Mile Track in Lexington, KY, the outdoor show's old-time ambiance is everywhere, with box seats brimming with seersucker suits, Lilly Pulitzer pastels and waiters deftly balancing silver trays of mint julips over all those regal, perfectly-coiffed heads. The horses are breathtaking. And when they march across the Red Mile Track, silhouetted by the Kentucky sunset, you'll be transported back in time.

One local of the Roanoke area said to Ms. Parker, "Why don't y'all stay in North Carolina next year!" What fun! Congratulations gang on setting the standard! .

Sondra Joins the CLS Team |
Have you Met Sondra, our Newest Instructor?
For those who haven't yet met Sondra, she's the newest member of the CLS Team. Sondra is a student at William Woods University where she's studying for a degree in Equestrian Studies. Sondra grew up riding with CLS Instructor, Ms. Kathryn, in Louisville, KY. She will be with us through August. Afterward, another wonderful CLS instructor will follow in her very big footsteps - that is, until she returns next summer! So far, the most excitement Sondra has seen this summer was from behind the wheel. She's pictured here driving a truck and horse trailer for the first time in her life!

Accounting Note |
Save by Paying Early and Paying on Time At CLS, we try very hard to provide the best instructors, the safest school horses, and the nicest indoor riding facility in North Carolina. But as in every business, in the face of increasing feed, bedding and insurance costs, it's a constant struggle. So please help us to maintain our current fees by paying your riding fees in a timely manner. CLS lesson prices are $35 per lesson. A discounted lesson price of $30 per lesson is offered if payments are received, in full for the month, at the time of our rider's first lesson each month. Otherwise, a fee of $35 will be charged. We've been very lax about enforcing this policy in recent years. Unfortunately, we must start enforcing it. Thanks so much for understanding. Please contact Parker at clsra@aol.com if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions. Please remember to make checks payable to "Cash Lovell." |
Famous Instructor Ellen Beard Visits CLS |
Internationally-acclaimed equitation instructor Ellen Beard visited CLS in June to work with our equitation riders. Of course, horses aren't the only thing Ellen enjoys riding as you can see above. |
Update on Ms. Lisa
Thank You for Your Thoughts and Prayers |
An update on Ms. Lisa. As many of you know, Ms. Lisa has returned to her home in Tennessee for a while to be with her ailing mother, and her daughter who was in a car wreck.
If you would like to send her a card or note of well-wishes, please drop it off with Charlene in the barn and we will send a big care package in the next couple of weeks. (Sending picture of Ms. Lisa) |
Upcoming Riding Schedules |
With the Lexington Jr. League Horse Show in July, and the World's Championship Horse Show in August, the CLS instructors will be traveling bunches in the weeks ahead. We try always to be patient and tolerant of our riders' busy summer schedules. So please, forgive us for asking that you do the same! We will always contact you ahead of time if a lesson will be cancelled. And if another CLS instructor is substitute teaching, know that you are in good hands. There is no such thing as a bad instructor in our barn! |
Summer Barn Rules |
We love our barn helpers. And we cherish their help. But our first and most important goal is to keep our barn helpers safe. So please . . .
1. Get approval from your instructor before coming to the barn
2. Follow your instructor's rules
3. Never go in a horse's stall or standing stall without permission, and always go in pairs.
4. NEVER ENTER THE PASTURE WITHOUT HAVING GONE THROUGH MS. PARKER'S PASTURE SAFETY CLASS.
5. AFTER THAT, NEVER enter the pasture without the express permission of an instructor. If that permission is granted, both people must never enter the pasture without a halter and lead rope, and most importantly, a whip.
6. Being a barn helper is a privilege. In order to keep the privilege, stay busy, keep the barn clean, use your manners, and always, always set a good example for the younger children.
7. Always use kind, respectful words.
8. Always treat others, humans, horses and dogs alike, as you want to be treated.
Parents - Please review these rules with your barn helpers if you would. Thanks! |
