AoR feet and roses

A chance to make your voice heard!

The EconomistAs those of you who follow us on Facebook and Twitter will already know, the Economist magazine's website are currently holding a poll asking the question 'Is research into alternative medicine a waste of time?'

Anyone can answer this poll (we've all voted at the office!), and at the moment it looks like the answer is a resounding 'no!' - however, every vote counts, so please go on there and vote as well. If you've got any friends who would also join in, please do copy and send the link to them, and encourage them to do so too.

Let's make our voices heard that CAM research is NOT a waste of time!

As you may know, the theme of this year's World Reflexology Week is Stress.

The AoR have put together a 'Stress-free' information pack for those who are interested in running an event this year, which is available by clicking here.

The information booklet also contains a form that you can print out and fill in to register your event on the AoR website. Don't forget, there is a free event pack available for all those who register the events they are running with us, consisting of balloons, leaflets, posters and keyrings.

AoR Summer School - thank you to both speakers and attendees

Summer School pic2

The AoR would like to express our thanks to all who attended the Summer School in Harrogate at the end of May, both for the lovely, supportive atmosphere of friendship and learning that they created when they were there, and for their lovely comments after the event.

Special thanks also go to our fantastic speakers,  whose knowledge, enthusiasm and time was invaluable in creating such an enjoyable and informative weekend.

We've included a selection of the attendees' comments below to give everyone a feel for what the event was like through the attendees' eyes...

"Thoroughly enjoyed the summer school and would definitely do again"

"Absolutely fantastic weekend, life changing, thank you!"

"Excellent 3 days, everyone very enthusiastic. Good venue, brilliant, inspirational speakers. Would definitely recommend"

"I have enjoyed the variety of the weekend, well organised"

Tracey visits RiEN

Tracey SmithAs you may know, one of the many benefits of being a member of the AoR is the fact that you belong to an association which is one of the movers and shakers in the world of reflexology.

One of the ways in which we do this is through our Reflexology Support Manager Tracey Smith's involvement in RiEN (Reflexology in Europe), a collaboration of reflexology associations across Europe whose aim is to work together to raise the profile of the profession as a whole across the whole of Europe.

On 27th - 29th May this year, Tracey attended RiEN's latest meeting in Amersfort in the Netherlands. While she was there, she was involved in many discussions, some particularly regarding the issue of reciprocal agreements between the organisations involved with RiEN (something that has in the past been a hot topic amongst our members).

A further long discussion was had about RiEN's involvement with the European Federation for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (EFCAM) and the increasing likelihood of a more expensive membership.

EFCAM lobbies the EU health division for the recognition of complementary health. It is clear that the EU needs to be lobbied; however, RiEN do not have sufficient funding to support the required effect, so the decision was made to create a European Reflexology Day (see below).

The inauguration of European Reflexology Day

This is the introduction of a new European Reflexology Day on the last Saturday of April 2012, and every year thereafter.

The aims of this new day will be to provide you with a second chance in the year to increase public awareness of reflexology and your business within the UK and to help fund the lobbying of the EU for European-wide acknowledgement of reflexology and CAM.

In taking part in this day, on this day only in the year, you will be part of a European-wide day for recognition.

The day itself will be run a little like a mini version of World Reflexology Week, where you will be given information and materials to support you running an event on the day. However, instead of giving taster sessions on a voluntary basis, you would do it on a donation/paid for basis, keeping half of the proceeds for your favourite charity or for local use, and sending half of the proceeds to RiEN via the AoR.

We'll be providing more information closer to the time - so if you'd like to get involved, please watch this space!

Alan Boswell insurance - did you know...?

Alan Boswell logoDid you know that Alan Boswell basic insurance alone covers

207 different therapies?

And that for an extra £10 per year, they'll add in professional fees for tax investigation, Jury Service compensation and, most importantly,  a legal advice helpline for both personal and business legal matters?

At the AoR, we're proud of our association with Alan Boswell Group; we regularly review the level of cover and the price of the cover with them to make sure that you as members get one of the best levels of cover on offer to reflexologists, at an affordable rate, from someone we know we can trust to provide what you need.

As a quick note to all members, Alan Boswell will cease to cover Gerson Diet/ Gerson therapy from the date of this year's renewal; however, they do ask that if you practice this therapy, please contact them on thead@alanboswell.com as they are happy to make alternative arrangements for you.

Lorraine Perretta Seminar, 9th June 2011

lorraineThe AoR office have recently received a few queries regarding whether we plan on broadcasting the forthcoming Lorraine Perretta Nutrition seminar as a webinar for £20 a ticket - currently we have no plans to do this unless enough people show interest. If you are interested in watching this seminar as a live webinar, please do contact Jo Greenslade on jgreenslade@aor.org.uk; she will monitor the responses and if there is enough interest shown, will specially commission the webinar to be shown for you. If you contact her to show interst, she will keep you updated as to whether it will go ahead.

Institute of Optimum Nutrition: New Beginnings Conference, June 18th 2011, London W1

Val Bullen, the Principal and CEO of the Institute of Optimum Nutrition (ION), has arranged an array of prestigious speakers including Prof. David Barker on Nutrition and Pregnancy,  Prof. Michael Crawford on EFA's-Gene Expression and Belinda Barnes from Foresight and others to speak at a conference about subjects from pre-conceptual care to breast-feeding.

Although this is not an AoR seminar, we thought you might be interested in it, especially as they have kindly offered AoR members a discounted rate for attendance of £75 (rather than the £99 it would normally cost to attend).

If you're interested, please click here to access the flyer for the conference to provide more information. Please book directly with ION if you would like to attend.

Don't forget - the AoR are hosting an introductory seminar on nutrition by Lorraine Perretta on 9th July with an attendance fee of just £50 for members. Please click here for more details.
