Disaster & Emergency Planning
| |
Does your business have a disaster/emergency plan in place?
FEMA has estimated that roughly 40 to 60 percent of small businesses hit with a disaster are unable to return to business. Careful planning ahead of time can be your lifeline to staying in business. Visit www.PrepareMyBusiness.org for tips, a preparedness toolkit, planning checklists, and best practices for testing preparedness plans. At Fidelity Associates, we have an "Emergency Preparedness Committee", including employees representing all departments in our office, who meet regularly to review our emergency/disaster plan; considering situations from fire, to flu epidemic, to server failure, and more. Here are just a few of the preparations our committee has made:
A plan for employees to work from home, in situations such as a weather disaster or flu epidemic/quarantine requiring even healthy workers to stay home. In case of emergency, we have the ability to allow employee access to our computer system from home, and the ability to transfer our incoming phone calls to an emergency backup system, that re-routes the calls to employee cell phones. We put this plan into action during the record snowfall that hit Spokane in December 2008, and many of our clients who needed to reach us at that time were pleasantly surprised to find us "open" for business, when many other businesses were closed.
An emergency manual is given to all of our employees to keep at home. The manual includes not only references that employees can use to prepare their family and home for emergencies; but also the basic information they will need to assist our clients from home, even if unable to access our computer system, such as lists of all our insurance carriers' phone numbers.
Also included in the emergency manual is an employee phone tree, so that we have a plan in place for making sure all of our employees are contacted quickly in event of emergency.
System data is backed up daily and taken off-site daily.
Several of our employees have taken a first-aid training course, and have first-aid signs near their desk/office door, so that others in the office can quickly locate help when needed. Basic emergency supplies are kept on hand in the office. There are many things to consider in order to prepare your business for possible emergencies or disasters. Visit www.PrepareMyBusiness.org for more information. |
