The Big Idea Fest 2011

The Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education  is hosting the 3rd annual Big Ideas Fest.  This three-day gathering of the nation's most creative makers and doers in education brings together champions across K-12, higher education, and informal learning, to participate in a truly unique interactive experience.  You'll hear from inspiring speakers and take part in action collaboratives designed to incubate solutions to address education's most pressing challenges.

Digital Citizenship Webinar Series

A webinar series, produced in partnership by the CCCOE, AT&T, Region IV CTAP, and East Bay Computer Using Educators, will be covering the issues surrounding digital citizenship.  These presentations are directed to school-district or school-site administrators, teacher leaders, and technology managers.  The one-hour sessions are presented by nationally recognized guest speakers, representing such services as NetSmartz and Common Sense Media.  Each webinar will leave time for questions from the participants.

Best Practices in Teaching Leadership BTSA Saturday Seminar Series

This seminar series provides a broad range of opportunities for professional educators to learn research-based techniques and strategies from local and national professionals.  Keynote and breakout sessions cover a variety of topics and grade levels, and provide practical and purposeful tools for both general and special educators to improve teaching practice.  Networking opportunities with educators from other schools and districts are another key benefit.  The program meets BTSA Induction professional development requirement. Graduate academic credit or continuing education units may also be earned.

Maximizing Student Potential: Cultivating Creativity and Critical Thinking

The California Association for the Gifted (CAG) is presenting an affordable day-long Northern California Symposium for educators and parents entitled Maximizing Student Potential: Cultivating Creativity and Critical Thinking. The keynote address will be delivered by Sandra Kaplan, Ed.D., an internationally known expert in differentiated education.  More than 24 workshops will be offered throughout the day.  Teachers will come away with concrete cost-effective tools for keeping students at all levels engaged and challenged.

Contra Costa Regional Area Energy Workshop

ConocoPhillips and the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project have partnered for the 4th year to provide teachers in 26 cities, across 19 states with curriculum and training opportunities.  They believe it is important to provide professional development opportunities for classroom teachers and to introduce exciting and engaging energy curriculum to students in today's classrooms. The one-day energy classroom workshop will feature plenty of lesson plans, curriculum materials, and a set of Energy Infobooks for student research. Along with meals, parking, and materials, all attendees' substitute reimbursements will be covered.

Get Real Academy 2012

The 9th Annual Get Real Academy, presented by Soroptimist International, is a life-skills conference for high school senior girls focusing on life after high school.  Seminars throughout the day will include such topics as money management, women's health, domestic and workplace violence issues, insurance, career success, and job search tips.  Sign-ups are now being taken.

Bay Area Science Festival

The Science & Health Education Partnership at the University of California, San Francisco is pleased to lead the inaugural Bay Area Science Festival. The ten-day festival will provide a wide range of science and technology activities: lectures, debates, exhibitions, concerts, plays, workshops, etc., held at a variety of locations throughout the Bay Area.

American Education Week (AEW)
This year's theme, Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility, highlights the importance of bringing together educators, school staff, parents, students, and communities in a unified effort to build great public schools.  Use the online toolkit for activity ideas, templates, and downloadable materials.  Here are some featured events and dates for the upcoming AEW:

Bay Area Environmental Education Resource Fair

For 35 years, educators, parents, and students concerned about the environment we share, have been coming to the Bay Area Environmental Education Resource (BAEER) Fair for the latest in classroom materials, environmental education programs, and information about field trip sites.  More than 70 exhibitioners will be on hand to provide a variety of events, demonstrations, interactive opportunities, and workshops.

2012 High School Mock Trial Program
The Contra Costa County High School Mock Trial Program is sponsored by the Constitutional Rights Foundation (CRF), and is coordinated by the CCCOE.  This year, CRF's case is a murder mock trial. 
Dates and location: Seven evening matches during the month of February, 5:00-8:00 p.m.; Martinez courtrooms

High School Mock Trials (Law Professional volunteers needed)

The CCCOE is looking for additional members of the California Bar Association and second- and third-year law students to serve as scorers and judges at the upcoming 31st Annual Contra Costa County Mock Trial Program.  New volunteers will be joining more than 150 practicing and retired Bay Area lawyers, district attorneys, public defenders, and judges, as well as second-and third-year Bay Area college law students, who will be returning as Mock Trial scorers and judges.

Junior Science and Humanities Symposium
The 50th Annual Northern California Western Nevada Regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium is an outstanding opportunity for interested students to hear world and nationally renowned scientists speak on their research, visit laboratories of practicing university and industrial scientists, talk informally with scientists about future career options, and converse with peers about shared interests in science, engineering, math, and technology.

Youth Gardening Grants

The National Gardening Association and The Home Depot will sponsor 100 Youth Gardening grants for the 2011 cycle.  Amounts range from $500-$1000.

Emergency Shelter-in-Place Preparedness Grants

The Contra Costa County Community Awareness and Emergency Response (CAER) provides up to $2,000 grants to improve the preparedness of Contra Costa County schools and agencies in responding effectively to shelter-in-place emergencies.  The proposed drills and exercises must have a stated list of objectives and goals that must be addressed.

The Captain Planet Foundation

The Captain Planet Foundation funds grants to promote understanding of environmental issues for school-age children.  Grant amounts range from $250-$2500, with applications reviewed three times a year.

The Weather Channel Kids

Positive Mental Attitude Seminar

The Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) Seminar is a 50 Minute PowerPoint Presentation, which is done in a classroom setting.  Presented by Contra Costa Kops for Kids, their mission is to help prevent drug abuse, gangs, violence, and juvenile delinquency in Contra Costa County by providing athletic, educational, and other programs for at-risk youth.  The object of Positive Mental Attitudes is to bring the concept of positive mental attitudes to the students at the high school level who are least likely to have such an attitude.

River of Words Art and Poetry Contest

Produced by the River of Words organization, entry forms are now available for their annual competition.  The contest, on the theme of watersheds, is open to any child from 5-19 years of age who have not completed high school.
