Contra Costa County Office Of Education STEM supports the academic success of our districts by: - Providing high-quality, timely communication to educators via the STEM website, the STEM enews, and leadership organizations regarding STEM resources and opportunities.
- Creating partnerships with business and community organizations to provide professional development, outreach programs, and other STEM events.
- Offering inspirational and challenging STEM programs throughout the educational process (pre-K through 16) including integrated curriculum, extra-curricular activities, and real-world applications.
- Supporting professional development, seminars, and other outreach activities to educators, parents, and community members.

Summer Fellowship Program
Stanford Summer Research Program for Teachers (SRPT) and Stanford Engineering Research Experience for Teachers (SERET) offer eight-week research fellowships for middle school, high school and community college science, engineering and technology teachers. Participating teachers earn a stipend.

Summer Institute for Middle School Teachers on Nanotechnology
The Center for Probing the Nanoscale (CPN) offers the one-week Summer Institute for Middle School Teachers (SIMST) annually. At the Institute teachers learn about the physical concepts underlying concept of nanotechnology and nanoscience in simple terms. Daily sessions focus on content lectures and inquiry-based modules that explicitly address California's 5-8 grade physical science content standards. Teachers will also receive a hands-on activity classroom kit with many fun activities that bring nanoscience into the classroom · Learn about nanoscience & engineering in simple terms · Develop and receive hands-on classroom activities · Interact with scientists at Stanford University · Gain hands-on experience in research labs · Receive a $650 stipend & professional development units.

Coast Alive! Teacher Institute at Monterey
Explore the Elkhorn Slough and nearby beaches while learning to incorporate stimulating, inquiry based, and multimedia curriculum in your middle or high school science classroom. The focus on experimental design will help you develop a hypothesis and conduct research in the best possible setting--the field! Return with students to design and conduct field studies. You will participate in hands-on local field investigations, receive a free Coast Alive!-Land-Sea Interface CD-ROM, use Coast Alive! materials, and earn a $500 stipend from California State Parks and the California Institute for Biodiversity. Enrollment will fill before the end of the school year. For upper elementary and middle school educators; 6 CSUMB academic quarter units. Registration fee without credit: $50.

2011 Toyota International Teacher Program to Costa Rica
Toyota announces its 2011 Toyota International Teacher Program to Costa Rica, which will take place November 19 through December 3, 2011. Full-time classroom teachers of all subjects, and librarians, grades 7 - 12, are now invited to apply on-line. The Toyota International Teacher Program is a fully-funded international professional development program for U.S. teachers, advancing environmental stewardship and global connectedness in U.S. schools and communities. The program to Costa Rica will explore environmental and cultural preservation, biodiversity, and sustainability through a variety of site visits, discussions, lectures, and hands-on activities. Program participants will have an opportunity to meet with local experts, visit schools and museums, and experience the rainforest first-hand. The program values diversity and encourages educators of all backgrounds, subjects, and school types to apply for this unique professional development opportunity.

The CCCOE and the Contra Costa Economic Partnership (along with numerous professional partners) will once again be producing two outstanding hands-on education career camps, offered to incoming Contra Costa County high school juniors and seniors this summer. The camps are scheduled for these dates: Construction and Engineering, June 20-24, Diablo Valley College, Pleasant Hill and Biotechnology, July 11-15, CSUEB, Concord.
