Summer Leadership Institute
| |
Transforming Ourselves and Our Schools: Achieving Results in Difficult Times is the title of this upcoming professional development program. You will hear national leaders and local practitioners share their experience in transforming their schools and participate in powerful exercises to help you examine your own personal leadership successes and challenges. You will also have time to meet new colleagues from around the Bay Area through informal activities.
Date and location: June 23, 9 a.m.-4:00 p.m.; St. Mary's College, Moraga

AB 430 Administrator Training Program

AB 430 is a State Board of Education approved training program that focuses on developing the leadership skills necessary for administrators to implement a coherent, effective standards-based instructional program to improve student achievement, including understanding the school's adopted textbook programs, developing professional learning communities, acting on assessment data, aligning fiscal resources, providing teacher support, and using technology resources. Completion of AB 430 is accepted as Tier 2 for the Professional Administrative Service Credential.

English Learner Support
|
The CCCOE will be presenting a five-day SB 472 English Learners Professional Development (ELPD) institute for teachers grades 5-8.
Key Outcomes:
- Use curriculum frameworks to differentiate instruction through universal access
- Measure and analyze the achievement of ELS, and use this information for instruction
- Plan and teach ELD and monitor student progress at each level of English proficiency
- Understand oral Language, vocabulary, and writing development
- Implement effective comprehension and other instructional strategies
- Know and understand EL specific intervention techniques

Career-Focused Summer Camps
|
The CCCOE and the Contra Costa Economic Partnership (along with numerous professional partners) will once again be producing two outstanding hands-on education career camps offered to incoming Contra Costa County high school juniors and seniors this summer. The week-long camps will feature hands-on projects, field trips, and lectures led by a full range of industry experts and teachers. The camps are scheduled for the following dates: Construction and Engineering, June 20-24, Diablo Valley College, Pleasant Hill and Biotechnology, July 11-15, CSUEB, Concord

Countywide Shelter-in-Place Drill

Put this on your calendar today! Community Awareness Emergency Response (CAER) invites all schools to practice and improve their site emergency procedures for shelter-in-place by taking part in this 10th annual county-wide exercise. Guidelines for this program will be sent out to all districts and school principals in September. Schools can use the time for training, running brief drills, or conducting more detailed emergency exercises.

Summer Career Academy at Los Medanos College

Incoming high school juniors and seniors are invited to discover interesting, high-paying technical careers in local industries by attending the Summer Career Academy at Los Medanos College. Attendees will learn from expert speakers and hands-on activities about industrial technology, fire technology, welding technology, and HVAC/appliance technology.

27th Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day
|
California Coastal Cleanup Day is the premier volunteer event focused on the marine environment in the country. In 2010, more than 80,300 volunteers worked together to collect more than 1,100,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from our beaches, lakes, and waterways. California Coastal Cleanup Day has been hailed by the Guinness Book of World Records as "the largest garbage collection" (1993). Since the program started in 1985, over 800,000 Californians have removed more than 15 million pounds of debris from our state's shorelines and coast.

The Univision Éxito Escolar Scholarships
| |
The Univison Éxito Escolar Scholarship Awards were established to motivate and assist Bay Area Latino youth in pursuing and completing a college degree. This year, thousands of dollars in grant money will be awarded to 2011 Bay Area graduating students. The amount of each scholarship award will vary based on academic achievement and will be worth between $500 and $1,000.

Toshiba America Foundation is currently accepting applications from teachers who are passionate about making science and mathematics more engaging for their students.
Do you teach grades 6-12 science or math? Do you have a wish list of instructional equipment that will make learning more exciting for your students? If the answer is yes to these questions, Toshiba America Foundation would like to hear from you. Grades 6-12 applications for $5,000 or less are accepted on a rolling basis, throughout the calendar year. Grants requests of more than $5,000 are reviewed twice a year.

Whooping Cough Booster Shot Requirement
|
A new California state law requires all 7th- through 12th-grade students must show proof they have received a whooping cough (pertussis) booster shot, called Tdap, before starting school this fall 2011. Get your teen vaccinated now to beat the rush. And, be sure to keep vaccine records for proof.

John Muir Hospital Docent School Programs
|
Hospitals can be overwhelming places for young children and can create additional stress to any medical problems they may be experiencing. To help young children feel more comfortable and informed about hospitals, John Muir Hospital Docents have created two one-hour classroom presentations for second- and forth-grade students: "Hospital Adventures" (second grade) and "Meet the Germs" (fourth grade).

Stop Girl-on-Girl Violence and Bullying

The Contra Costa County Commission for Women will be presenting a morning program featuring a number of outstanding speakers on the subject of girl-on-girl bullying and cyber bullying. A number of related topics will be covered, including the effects of bullying, bullying victims, people who bully others, people who witness bullying, what adults can do to help, and what resources are available. Students (ages 10 and up), parents, and educators are all welcomed to attend.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): A Guide for Parents of Preschool to Elementary Age Children

Over the past decade, ASDs have been diagnosed with increasing frequency. Research shows that with early intervention, long-term outcomes can be improved. In this workshop, parents well receive an overview of ASDs and learn about:
- Common warning signs
- When and where to seek an evaluation for their child
- What the most effective treatments are, and where to get them
- Ways to mange the stress that comes with caring for a child with special needs
Attendees will hear from a parent and a panel of experts who will share practical strategies in manging and treating ASDs. Community resources will also be available.
