Crisis Response Workshop | |
If there were a crisis on your campus, how would you respond? Did you know that California Government Code and California Education Code require schools to have emergency and crisis response plans and to use the Incident Command System, a component of the Standardized Emergency Management System (SEMS)? This workshop is designed to provide participants with the awareness, knowledge, and skills to assist school personnel in developing Crisis Response or disaster preparedness plans that meet the Federal and State requirements, including SEMS. It will help schools connect with community agencies that most often respond in an emergency situation.

Digital Citizenship Webinar Series |
A webinar series, produced in partnership by the CCCOE, AT&T, Region IV CTAP, and East Bay Computer Using Educators, will be covering the issues surrounding digital citizenship. These presentations are directed to school-district or school-site administrators, teacher leaders, and technology managers. The one-hour sessions are presented by nationally recognized guest speakers, representing such services as NetSmartz and Common Sense Media. Each webinar will leave time for questions from the participants.

BioForum |
Experience California Academy of Sciences' BioForum, an event focused on current science topics relevant to teachers and their students. This upcoming presentation is titled California Marine Biodiversity: Knowing the Past and Planning for the Future. The California coast includes some of the most diverse marine habitats in the world, but the health of our coastal habitats is at risk. Climate change, pollution, and over-fishing threaten to diminish the vitality of the marine ecosystems which play an important role in San Francisco Bay Area life. Join us to learn about the amazing diversity of life just off our coast and how local researchers are working to understand the effects of global climate change on intricate species interactions. What are the challenges we face as ocean conservators and educators, and what actions can we take? Join us to find out what is needed to allow life to thrive here.

7th Annual Young Children's Issues Forum |
The purpose of this annual presentation is to provide a forum for discussion among legislators, local officials, and the community regarding current children's issues. This year's event will feature key-note speaker Delaine Eastin, former California state superintendent of public instruction. Eastin's keynote address will be followed by a panel presentation and discussion by state legislators and local elected officials who will speak about the current status of young children's health, education, social, and child-care services. Along with gathering information and network opportunities, the attendees will also be welcomed to ask the panel questions for additional discussions.

The Google Science Fair | |
The Google Science Fair (GSF) is a global competition that any student, aged 13-18, from around the world is eligible to enter. Students can enter as individuals or as teams of up to three, submission will be made online. The competition will culminate in a "once in a lifetime" celebratory event at Google headquarters, in California, in July 2011, where finalists will compete for internships, scholarships, and prizes in front of a panel of celebrity scientist judges including Nobel Laureates, tech visionaries, and household names.

Visuals and Voices Contest |
Middle- and high-school students are encouraged to express their feelings about environmental issues through art, photography, poetry, or writing, and submit their entries to EarthTeam's (ET) Visuals and Voices Contest. There is a number of prize categories, including one $100 grand prize. All submissions (whether through the Green News, by e-mail attachment or hard copy) will be featured in the Green News e-mail (sent to over 4,400 subscribers), posted on ET's Green News website, and many will be posted in ET's Annual Anthology and newsletters!

2011 Science and Engineering Fair | |
The 2011 Contra Costa County Science & Engineering Fair welcomes all to attend and view numerous projects submitted this year by county middle- and high-school students. Attendees can observe the presentations and experiments up close, as well as talk to the students who entered them.

2011 Fight the Bite Poster Contest | |
Through this national contest, students, grades 5-6, across the country are encouraged to help others learn ways to protect against tick and mosquito bites and the diseases they can transmit. State-contest-winning students, one from each grade, will earn a $50 prize, and will then be eligible for the national grand prize of $1,000.

Contra Costa Water District Video Contest | |
The Contra Costa County Water District's 75th Anniversary Video Contest is open to students attending high schools in the Water District's service area. Entries can be either a team or an individual effort. Prizes of $150, $100, and $50 will be given to the first three finishers, as well as matching funds to their schools.

2nd Annual First Amendment Cartoon Contest | |
Join the Judiciary of California and Constitutional Rights Foundation in celebrating the Bill of Rights with the Second Annual First Amendment Cartoon Contest. The contest is open to K-12 students nationwide. Six winners will each receive a $50 gift certificate. In addition, up to five entries will receive honorable mentions. Winners and honorable mentions will be announced on Law Day, May 1, 2011.

Green Your School Challenge | |
Do Something and Hewlett Packard (HP) are providing funding and HP computers to K-12 schools that reduce their carbon footprint. Four winners will receive a $1,000 grant and an HP Pavilion DM1 laptop, and one grand prize winner will receive a $5,000 grant and 5 HP Pavilion DM1 laptop computers to power even more green projects! Eligible schools must make concrete efforts to reduce their environmental impact during an eight-week competition. Winners will be chosen based on their school's energy saved, garbage reduced, number of people involved, and innovative quality of actions and ideas.

The Doug Prouty Classroom Grant Program | |
East Bay Computer Using Educators (EBCUE) is proud to announce the 2011 Doug Prouty Classroom Grant Program. This program seeks to fund K-12 classroom teachers who want to implement creative, innovative, and student-centered uses of technology and support student achievement in core curriculum: English/language, arts, math, history/social science, and science. Grant amounts can go up to $1,500.

Discover the Delta Foundation Scholarships | |
The Discovery the Delta Foundation is offering five $1,000 scholarships to 2011 seniors graduating from high school in one of the five Delta Counties: Contra Costa, Sacramento, Solano, San Joaquin, and Yolo counties. There are three components that must be included with the scholarship application and transcripts: essay, photograph, and exhibit design.

Earn it! Keep it! Save it! (EKS) | |
All across Contra Costa County, IRS certified volunteer tax preparers help individuals and families claim their maximum tax refund through two programs: the EKS Contra Costa Campaign and AARP's Tax-Aide -- and it's absolutely free. You may also qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which could mean a refund of up to $5,666. EKS Contra Costa serves individuals and families who earned less than $49,000 in 2010; Tax-Aide serves low and moderate income taxpayers of any age (income limit not specified) with special attention to seniors 60-plus.
