Professional Development / Opportunities
CAHSEE Writing Preparation for English Learners and Struggling Students
This two-day program is designed for teachers of all subject areas, grades 8-12, to better assist their English Learners and struggling students in passing the CAHSEE writing test.

Cool Tools VII

East Bay Computer Using Educators (CUE) presents Cool Tools for Learning VII. East Bay CUE is a professional organization of educators dedicated to supporting the use of technology in education. This day-long program will feature 12 hands-on labs focusing on how K-12 teachers can implement technology tools and applications in the classroom.

AB 430 Administrator Training Program
AB 430 is a State Board of Education approved training program that focuses on developing the leadership skills necessary for administrators to implement a coherent, effective standards-based instructional program to improve student achievement, including understanding the school's adopted textbook programs, developing professional learning communities, acting on assessment data, aligning fiscal resources, providing teacher support, and using technology resources.  Completion of AB 430 is accepted as Tier 2 for the Professional Administrative Service Credential.

Contra Costa Public Information Network (CCPIN)
Navigating the Legal Shoals of New Media will be the topic of the upcoming CCPIN presentation. The event's expert panelists will discuss such topics as open-meeting law issues; public records retention and disclosure; restrictions on employee use of social media--both on behalf of your agency and personally; and use of public resources, including both personal and political use.  Flyer.

English Language Development (ELD)
The CCCOE's English Learner Support department invites all to participate in this two-day ELD Program, presented by Kevin Clark and Associates.   Attendees will learn all aspects of providing a very successful ELD program in their schools.

Upcoming Events / Field Trips
High School Mock Trials (Law Professional volunteers needed)
We are looking for additional members of the California Bar Association and second- and third-year law students to serve as scorers and judges at the upcoming 30th Annual Contra Costa County Mock Trial Program.  New volunteers will be joining more than 150 practicing and retired Bay Area lawyers, district attorneys, public defenders, and judges, as well as Bay Area college law students, who will be returning as Mock Trial scorers and judges.

Academic Decathlon (volunteers needed)
Come out and join the fun, while helping our students with this outstanding event.  The Contra Costa County Academic Decathlon is held on three separate days, and we are looking for volunteers to judge Essay, Speech, and Interview sessions on two of those dates.

Contra Costa County Science & Engineering Fair

Contra Costa County businesses will once again join our county's K-12 educators to produce the annual Contra Costa County Science & Engineering Fair, this coming spring. 

Dates and location: March 31, April 1-2; Los Medanos College, Science Building

Google Science Fair

The Google Science Fair (GSF) is a global competition that any student, aged 13-18, from around the world is eligible to enter.  Students can enter as individuals or as teams of up to three, submission will be made online.  The competition will culminate in a "once in a lifetime" celebratory event at Google headquarters, in California, in July 2011, where finalists will compete for internships, scholarships, and prizes in front of a panel of celebrity scientist judges including Nobel Laureates, tech visionaries, and household names.

Coastal Art and Poetry Contest

To encourage youth to reflect on the beauty and spirit of our state's beaches and ocean, this special contest challenges California students to create artwork or poetry using a California coastal or marine theme. Prizes, awarded to five separate grade-level categories, include $100.00 gift certificates to an art-supply or book store.  Winners and honorable mentions will receive tickets to the Aquarium of the Pacific.  Each winner's teacher will receive a $50 gift certificate for education materials,

Alliance for Climate Education (ACE)
ACE is a national nonprofit, based in Oakland, that offers free multimedia assemblies on climate science and solutions.  ACE has reached more than 600K students nationwide, and more than 100K students in the Bay Area. After the assembly, ACE helps schools set up Action Teams to take on eco-projects at school, and offers grants, scholarships, and leadership training for committed students.  The program addresses state science standards.

Community Warning System
The Community Warning System (CWS) of the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff offers a voluntary cell phone alert program.  This program allows cell phone users to be notified of hazardous material incidents and other emergencies that pose an imminent threat to human life or health.  Users can tailor the alerts they receive to specific areas in the county by choosing specific cities or zip codes from a provided list.  You can register your cell phone by simply going to their website and submitting your cell phone number and county locations you are interested in being notified of an emergency.

Business / Education Leadership Summit

The Contra Costa Economic Partnership invites you to their Business / Education Leadership Summit to help forge strategies with key education and business representatives that:

  • Align regional economic development strategies with those of high school reform in the East Bay 
  • Connect career-themed high school smaller learning communities and academies with growing industry sectors and regional workforce pipeline needs
  • Explore seamless transitions mapping from high school to post-secondary education and training 
  • Expand on ways in which to increase high school reforms that utilize Linked Learning approaches
  • Maximize school, district and industry leadership capacity

2nd Annual Amendment Cartoon Contest

Join the Judiciary of California and Constitutional Rights Foundation in celebrating the Bill of Rights with the Second Annual First Amendment Cartoon Contest.  The contest is open to K-12 students nationwide.  Six winners will each receive a $50 gift certificate.  In addition, up to five entries will receive honorable mentions.  Winners and honorable mentions will be announced on Law Day, May 1, 2011

Grants / Scholarships
Emergency Preparedness Grants
The Contra Costa County Community Awareness and Emergency Response (CAER) is offering grants, up to $2,500, to be used to support drills and exercises.  CAER provides these grants to improve the preparedness of Contra Costa County schools and agencies in responding effectively to emergencies.  The proposed drills and exercises must have a stated list of objectives and goals that must be addressed.
