The Art of Marilyn Witkowski

August 2010            News From My Studio
You're invited to my first solo exhibit!

Greetings!

Greetings! First, my big news. Penn Place Gallery will be displaying my recent paintings and prints for several weeks. I'm still working out the details for an early afternoon opening on August 14th, so expect a separate invite shortly.

As you know, it's been a long time since I've shared news with you about my art journey. This is because since last fall, I've been studying at the Art Institute in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to broaden my art and design capabilities. I loved learning current techniques for photo restoration and editing, graphic design, typography, and digital illustration.

Not only have I "gone digital" by learning how to design artworks and communications on the computer, but my experiences will strongly influence my new paintings and silkscreens.

To share my new work, I'm revising my website to include
drawings, digital illustrations, and silkscreens, along with my paintings. But rather than wait for my new site to be posted, here is a first peek at my digital work.

I wish you all a wonderful summer. It's great to be back in Maryland and I look forward to seeing you at the gallery opening.

Remember Red Skelton?

Painting of Marilyn Monroe's Last Home in Brentwood, California

I do. He was a wonderfully funny, yet dignified clown, and one of my father's favorite comedians. Sadly, not too many of the young students in my recent Advanced Digital Illustration class knew about this great pantomime artist and early television star.

To celebrate Red Skelton, I created this poster using Adobe Illustrator. I designed it as an 11 X 14 print, so it fits nicely in a standard frame. Each poster is hand signed.

One fun class was
Typography--the art o
f arranging, modifying
and designing type.
In this class, we were asked to design a poster
using "type as art" to promote typography classes at the Art
Institute to area
high school students.

To appeal to a young
audience, I drew a beagle
using only the letters in the
word beagle. I chose the Hobo typeface to draw the beagle because of its curvy and rounded shapes. This poster, along with other graphic design and digital illustration pieces, will soon be posted on my new site for a closer look.
