Maria is a monolingual Spanish speaking person and a mother of two who sought separation from a controlling husband. While her case was pending, Maria's husband denied her access to her children for five agonizing months. Meanwhile, because of her language barrier and limited understanding of how the court functions, Maria missed a court hearing, causing her case to be dismissed. Unable to navigate the justice system on her own, she turned to Tacoma Pierce County VLS.  A  volunteer lawyer, paralegal and interpreter worked together to help Maria prepare and submit the proper documents necessary to successfully gain custody of her children and dissolution from her husband. Now Maria and her children are starting a new life together.

Plain Language Family Law Court Forms
By: Charles R. Dyer, Project Manager
Pro Se Project | Washington State Access to Justice Board

The most significant barrier to justice for self represented litigants is often informational. "What do they want? What am I supposed to do?" At least in the area of family law, the Washington State Pattern Forms Committee has created mandatory forms, so, as a litigant, you no longer have to make up the motion for a restraining order on your own. It should be simple fill-in-the-blank.

King County Executive Preserves Legal Aid Funding; Council Members Urged to Do the Same

 Exec. Dow Constantine

On Monday, September 26, King County Executive Dow Constantine unveiled a proposed 2012 budget that preserves funding for several Alliance for Equal Justice members in King County. TeamChild, Solid Ground, Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, and Eastside Legal Assistance Program received last year's level of appropriation. Unfortunately similarly to last year, Unemployment Law Project received no funding through the Executive's proposed 2012 budget.

Over the years, our perseverance and collaborative approach has proved largely successful at maintaining funding levels that allow programs to continue providing King County low-income individuals and families with meaningful access to the justice system. Our programs provide support to those affected by unemployment, unfair home-mortgage lending practices, protection to survivors of domestic violence, and to ensure that the most vulnerable and marginalized youth have access to critical support that can put them on a path to success and productive adulthood.

Take a momement to thank King County Executive Dow Constantine for supporting the work of The Alliance for Equal Justice and urge our King County Council members to support The Alliance.
