Legal Aid at Risk in 2010 Legislative Session

capitolAnother tough legislative session began on Monday. Last year legal aid supporters like you helped keep state funding for legal aid relatively stable. Due to continued revenue shortfalls and increasing caseloads, Washington still faces a budget deficit and the Legislature will be looking for ways to close the $2.6 billion hole. Northwest Justice Project, TeamChild, and other Alliance for Equal Justice programs are at great risk of cuts. We must stand ready to take action and contact our legislators when the time comes.

Perspectives on Justice: The Alliance Interview with Aurora Martin

Aurora Martin"Civil legal aid ensures that equal justice as a matter of law remains possible, and sustains the movement for equal justice. Although it seems that our history has been a long struggle to make the case that legal aid is about justice and not charity for low-income clients, the experience also has been based on progressive coalition building that yields fresh voices in the communities we serve and the colleagues with whom we work."

Aurora Martin is the Deputy Director of Columbia Legal Services and a former Equal Justice Fellow with that organization.
