Shortage of Skilled Workers Leaves 10 Million Jobs Worldwide Unfilled

About 10 million manufacturing jobs cannot be filled worldwide because of a shortage of skilled workers, according to a report released Tuesday by the World Economic Forum and Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Ltd.

"In the race to future prosperity, nothing will matter more than talent," Craig Giffi, co-author of the report, said in a statement. "The skills gap that exists today will not likely close in the near future, which means companies and countries that can attract, develop and retain the highest skilled talent - from scientists, researchers and engineers to technicians and skilled production workers - will come out on top."

Hicks: Europe Points to Another Recession

A Ball State University economist says he believes the United States is either in another recession, or could be soon. Center for Business and Economic Research Director Mike Hicks says a recession continues in Europe, and historically the U.S. follows that region's economic patterns. He says even though Indiana continues to outperform the national economy, the state will experience slower economic growth if the U.S. slips into a recession.

Henry County Reacts to "F" Rating

After receiving a shockingly poor community asset report card, Henry County will learn what it needs to do better during a public meeting scheduled 7 p.m. Thursday at the gallery of the Henry County Art Center.

Dr. Michael Hicks, who first presented the report by the Ball State University Center for Business and Economic Research, will discuss the report's findings and ways the county can improve its scores. Hicks will also share development opportunities in Henry County.

Keshia Atwood, executive director for Henry County Healthy Communities, is setting up the meeting for the New Castle-Henry County Economic Development Corp.

How Detroit is Rising

We've all read the story of Detroit's downfall by now. Once a booming hub for automotive manufacturing and a center for technological innovation, the veritable Silicon Valley of its day, the city has witnessed devastating economic changes. Between 2000 and 2010, the city's population fell by 25 percent, the largest drop of any city with a population over 100,000. Even New Orleans, despite Hurricane Katrina, didn't see a population plunge as dramatic. At the height of the recent economic crisis, Detroit's unemployment rate was 18.2 percent.

But the other story of Detroit, the bigger one - is of its rebirth, its rising. Given the austerity of these times, this is less a story of top-down government efforts, and much more a story of the organic efforts of the entrepreneurs and artists, designers and musicians who have chosen to live in Detroit and be the stewards of its resurgence.

Indiana Auto Momentum Continues

In what is expected to be another indication of a strengthening sector, Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc. is planning a jobs announcement this morning in Lafayette. Governor Mitch Daniels is expected to attend the event, which follows a record sales month for Subaru. The automaker posted its best-selling April in U.S. history. Subaru is planning to introduce the 2013 versions of the Legacy and Outback later this year. Both models are produced at the Lafayette plant.

Indiana Slips in Life Sciences Funding

Indiana has taken "a giant step backward" in the availability of early-stage capital for life sciences companies, according to the Indiana Health Industry Forum-which also has a few ideas on how to reverse those developments.

The Indianapolis-based trade association unveiled a five-year strategy on May 7, with a heavy focus on how to make more money available to life sciences innovators who are trying to prove their ideas have commercial potential.

Boone County Cash Mob

A cash mob is a way to support a locally owned business with a little home-grown economic stimulus. Here's how it works. At a specific place and time, people are invited and encouraged to show up and spend $20 or more and also to invite their friends to do the same.

We sincerely appreciate those who attended our last Cash Mob at Faucett & Flame!

Be on the Lookout for our next event.
