Zionsville Schools Prepare for Worst Case Scenario

The Zionsville Community School Board of Trustees hopes for the best case scenario for the Tuesday, May 8, referendum question but was forced to prepare for the worst Monday.

The board voted 4 to 1, with Bill Stanczykiewicz voting against, to cut the equivalent of nearly 17 teaching positions for next school year during its meeting Monday night. The savings generated by cutting these teachers equals more than $1 million, which will help cover the cost of a $2.5 million projected budget deficit for next year. Money from the Rainy Day Fund and increased program fees will cover the rest of the shortfall.

If it passes, the referendum would allow ZCS to add an additional tax rate of not more than 24.4 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. ZCS estimates that revenue would total $4.7 million, more than enough to repeal Monday's cuts, and others already made, including some that have caused classes size to swell. Read more....

Lebanon City Cleanup Set for May 5th
Cleanest City Campaign Makes an Impact
Efforts to clean up the city of Lebanon are working and will be aided by the entire community during a cleanup day on May 5th.
Lebanon Street Superintendent Larry Lee said street sweepers are picking up fewer cigarette butts around town, especially in the downtown area during night sweeping. He notices this change after the "Lebanon: The Cleanest City in Indiana" initiative was started.
"It's very noticeable; there are quite a bit fewer cigarette butts," he said. "And a lot more people are using the recyclable containers."
The cleanest city initiative, which began with the Lebanon Rotary Club, recently received another grant from the Lebanon Stormwater Board to purchase another 500 butt buckets - in vehicle ash trays - at about a total of $850. The board also purchased the initial 1,00 butt buckets and paid for some trash containers on the downtown square. Read more.....
