Boone EDC Weekly

Greetings from the Boone EDC,

Welcome to Boone EDC Weekly.

As an organization, the Boone EDC is constantly researching and benchmarking to learn what our competing communities are doing to attract and retain business.  Boone EDC Weekly is a compilation of noteworthy National and Indiana news about economic development trends.  We will also post information about upcoming conferences, events, and

webinars that you may find interesting.

Boone EDC Weekly is another tool that you can refer to as a community leader to help Boone County continue to move forward in a positive manner.

Hamilton County Town Pumping Millions Into Roads

The Town of Fishers is launching a $20 million road improvement effort. Community leaders say the initiative will focus on areas with historically high-traffic volume. Work has already started on one project, with other improvements expected to be completed this year.

Desperately Seeking Americans For Factory Jobs

U.S. factories are creating many new jobs. But owners are hard pressed to find skilled American workers to fill them.

There is a "critical shortage of machinists," a common and crucial position in factories, said Rob Akers, vice president at the National Tooling and Machining Association. "Enrollment in this field in technical schools has been down for a long time."

Indiana Wants Manufacturing Jobs

Betting on a resurgence in manufacturing, states are aggressively rolling out the red carpet to businesses to set up shop or expand production within their borders.

Indiana, Utah, Idaho are among the many states courting companies in hopes of boosting jobs and revenue.

"Their high-level sell generally includes tax breaks, incentives for training workers, low utility rates and incentives for using alternative energy," said Scott Paul, executive director with the Alliance for American Manufacturing.

Indiana is offering all of that, and more. Indiana has cut its corporate tax rate by 25%, reduced property tax rates by a third, and increased R&D tax credits.

The Distinctive City

Around the world, cities are seeking the recipe for economic success in a rapidly changing global marketplace. Indispensable assets in a post-industrial economy include: well-educated people, the ability to generate new ideas and to turn those ideas into commercial realities, connectivity to global markets, and multi-modal transportation infrastructure. Another critical-but often forgotten-asset is community distinctiveness.

West Lafayette Pushing Expansion; City's Leaders Eager to See TIF District Grow

West Lafayette's tax increment finance district is on the verge of flowing well beyond the Levee area where it originated. Its size will triple.

The city council last Monday approved the expanded TIF district. At the redevelopment commission's 8:30 a.m. April 18 meeting, the proposal will receive a public hearing and final approval.

Revenue from the expanded TIF district will generate opportunities to address long-standing problems.

Preparing for Next-Gen Workers, With Next-Gen Brains

Many of the employees entering the workforce in the next few years will have been raised on the Internet, which has shaped the way their brains are wired. Are companies ready for this generation of workers?

Boone County Cash Mob

A cash mob is a way to support a locally owned business with a little home-grown economic stimulus. Here's how it works. At a specific place and time, people are invited and encouraged to show up and spend $20 or more and also to invite their friends to do the same.

We are now taking suggestions for our next Cash Mob!
