| Ohio Wins Site Selection Magazine's Governors Cup for 2011
Ohio has won the 2011 Site Selection Governor's Cup, which the 58-year-old Atlanta-based magazine has awarded annually since 1978 to the U.S. state with the most new and expanded corporate facilities as tracked by Conway Data Inc.'s New Plant Database. Conway Data publishes Site Selection, the senior publication in the corporate real estate and economic development field, and the official publication of the Industrial Asset Management Council.

Delaware County Revises Economic Development Deal
Delaware County has restructured an economic development agreement with Brevini Wind USA. The revisions extend a job creation target for wind turbine gear box manufacturer by about one year. That should coincide with plans to finish construction of a rail spur to help the company. The county should also gain an additional $5 million over the life of a tax increment financing district, which will likely be used to help fund more improvements in the area.

Kentucky Awards Grants to Promising Small High Tech Companies
17 high-tech Kentucky companies will share $6.2 million in state funds as part of a program to support and attract technology-based small businesses. Through the state's competitive Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Matching Funds program, Kentucky matches all or part of federal SBIR-STTR awards received by Kentucky-based companies or those willing to relocate operations to Kentucky.

USDA Seeks Applications for Rural Economic Development
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced on March 5th that USDA is seeking applications for loans and grants to help rural businesses create jobs and spur economic development. The funding is being provided under the Rural Economic Development Loan and Grant (REDLG) program.

Innovation Leading to Higher Unemployment
Technology entrepreneurs love to talk about disruption while simultaneously touting themselves as job creators, but the two roles are often contradictory. By definition, disruptive innovations are characterized by a streamlining of process or product that is more efficient. Typically, the inefficiencies removed from the incumbent system result in less required labor. Less labor means fewer jobs.

IEDC Web Seminar: Economic Development in a Digital World
Small businesses are the base of our national economy. To survive a recession, new strategies focusing on supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses are required. This web seminar will explore how economic developers can better incorporate home based workers and businesses into their local economy. It will also explore how we can now access our offices virtually, which means workers no longer need to live in the same region as their business.
