Hidden Gem

Leonard Slatkin Big, splashy Beethoven at the Bowl

The LA Phil's summer season opens with Slatkin, LAMC and a host of extras

It's not "hidden", but it doesn't get much better than this:  Leonard Slatkin at the podium, video projections by Herman Kolgen, the LA Master Chorale, and a quartet of soloists including

In an unusual turn, the program also includes contemporary selections from three female composers: Anna Clyne, Cindy McTee and Anne LeBaron (coming from the recent success of her 'Crescent City').  Get tickets now, and arrive early.  Take a picnic.  Sip something lovely under the stars, and enjoy the summer the best way LA knows how.  Nuff said.

LAURI D GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights

Summer is in full swing, and although there are fewer events, there are certainly good concerts to choose from between now and the end of July:

Summer series such as those at the historic HOLLYWOOD BOWL, THE HUNTINGTON, the 15th IPALPITI FESTIVAL, and (for those willing to travel a bit further), the REDLANDS BOWL and MUSIC ACADEMY OF THE WEST continue with gusto,

The LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC dives into summer with their 7/10 Hollywood Bowl opening, featuring Beethoven's 9th Symphony, one of the grandest works in the repertoire.  Later this month, the popular 'Grease Sing-A-Long' and the Bowl production of 'The Producers' (with a can't-miss cast) will delight musical theater lovers.  As always, get tickets early, and plan ahead.  Go to the Hollywood Bowl's website by clicking:
http://www.hollywoodbowl.com

SOUTHWEST CHAMBER MUSIC goes tres chic with a series of French programs at the glorious Huntington in Pasadena.  On July 28-29, soprano ELISSA JOHNSTON sings the unforgettable 'Chansons madécasses' from Maurice Ravel, on a program that also includes works by Debussy, Milhaud and Franck.  Tickets are available in the loggia or on the lawn -- for details, click:

This Sunday, July 8, those of us who missed the sold-out 'Sylvia' earlier in the season will have another chance to catch it, at least aurally:  Julia Adolphe's acclaimed chamber opera will be broadcast via Kinetics Radio on the web.  To "tune in", go to the Kinetics Radio website by clicking:

July 21 & 22, OPERA WORKS serves up their annual operatic improvisation with "Non-Boring Original Opera".  This is the culmination of four weeks' work with their summer students, in an innovative, intensive program built to launch very creative careers.  The show is never the same twice, so you might want to see both shows...  Get details by clicking:

Finally, inject a little magic into your summer with METROPOLITAN MASTER CHORALE's fundraiser at the historic (and completely unique) Magic Castle in Hollywood.  The event takes place Sunday, July 29, but tickets are limited: plan to get very dressed up, be amazed, and have a great time.  Start by clicking:

We'll continue to add events to our calendar throughout the summer -- check back often, so you don't miss a thing.  As always, thank you for supporting live singing!
