Last chance for tears

Just one performance remains of
Long Beach Opera's 'Ainadamar'

The name of Osvaldo Golijov seems to be everywhere in the last few years, whether his work is being premiered by major orchestras or creating firestorms of both enthusiasm and opinion.  But external drama aside, this is a composer with an innate sense of storytelling and magic, and 'Ainadamar', his collaboration with esteemed playwright Henry David Hwang brings the right kind of drama to Long Beach.

The Arabic title translates as "fountain of tears", and refers to an actual Spanish font that plays a symbolic role in the work and the death of playwright and poet Federico Garcia Lorca.  Told through the tales of actress Margarita Xirgu, who was both close to Lorca and served as his muse in some of his greatest work, the opera becomes "a gripping reflection on the undying faith of a people, the moral duty of the artist and the relationship between artistic and political freedom."  Superbly sung and staged with vivid, graphic sets and flying acrobats, you won't see it this way again.  Catch it quick...

LAURI D GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights

If you're not barbecuing this weekend or attending Memorial Day tributes, there is plenty of amazing music to be heard.  First off, this is the LAST weekend to see THE INDUSTRY's 'Crescent City' in Atwater Village (an absolute must), the LA PHIL'S 'Don Giovanni' at Disney Hall, and 'Grafts & Hybrids' from PACIFIC SERENADES.  (May has been a very good month!)

But LONG BEACH OPERA's 'Ainadamar', with just one performance left, will draw some special attention, what with flying performers, spectacular visuals, and the fascinating results of the collaboration between two controversial and very buzz-worthy artists: librettist DAVID HENRY HWANG and composer OSVALDO GOLIJOV.  As of press time, tickets are still available: get information and grab your seats now, by clicking:
http://www.longbeachopera.org

Don't forget about CAPPELLA ROMANA, performing at St. Sophia's with a trip back to the Byzantine era.  This event is part of the Da Camera Society's 'Chamber Music in Historic Sites' series, which puts the city's hidden and not-so-hidden architectural treasures to glorious use as acoustic theme parks.  It's an evocative combination that makes the whole experience richer.  Get details and tickets by clicking:
http://www.dacamera.org

One more:  CANTORI DOMINO welcomes powerhouse choral composer JONATHAN WILLCOCKS to conduct their Sunday afternoon concert in Santa Monica, wrapping up their season nicely.  For details, click:

Have a wonderful weekend, and a good Memorial Day... thank you for supporting live singing!
