Seekers of great music know that it often happens
off the beaten path, and that great spaces comes in many shapes and sizes. (What city has proven that better than Los Angeles?) This week includes several examples of SoCal's diversity, in our performers, our repertoire, our venues and in the way we approach musicmaking.
The big guns are in force, certainly: with SIMON RATTLE performing this weekend with the LA PHIL (joined by luminous mezzo MAGDALENA KOZENA for the unforgettable
Rückert-Lieder) and the LA CHAMBER ORCHESTRA joining forces with the rapidly developing PASADENA MASTER CHORALE at Glendale's Alex Theater, grand music is plentiful.
There's plenty of opera in store, as well: Saturday alone, REPERTORY OPERA COMPANY opens their '
Don Giovanni' in Pomona, VINEYARD TOURING OPERA continues their rounds with '
Tosca' in Santa Monica, LONG BEACH OPERA comes to LACMA for a sneak peek at their upcoming Golijov show, '
Ainadamar', and CELESTIAL OPERA continues their '
Lucia di Lammermoor' in South Pasadena.
There are several events that are particularly unusual, however: on Friday night, OPERAWORKS comes to Beverly Hills with a gala fundraiser, '
THE MET on Broadway II'. Last year's event sold out, so if you can still get a seat, it will be an evening to remember. So, too, will be '
Celebrating Shigemi' at Cal State Long Beach, a group recital marking the 25 years that SHIGEMI MATSUMOTO has taught at the school. That same evening (Friday's a big one!), the ASIA AMERICA SYMPHONY presents an evening of vocal favorites from ANTOINE DIEL,
one of the Three Filipino Tenors, at Zipper Hall in Downtown LA. Decisions, decisions...
Like the 50s? Sunday brings '
Automobilia' to life in Rancho Dominguez, celebrating and raising funds for the LONG BEACH CAMERATA SINGERS: this exclusive event is hosted by Rick Lorenzen, showcasing SoCal's foremost private collection of classic cars, and will feature food, wine and Broadway classics. Poodle skirts optional. Get details by clicking:
