Julius Röntgen
Should Mother Hubbard have tried harder?

Re-discovered Röntgen & Bridge songs come to Malibu's very
special space

You never know what you'll find when you clean out the cupboards.  When one of Julius Röntgen's relatives found five unfamiliar songs in another relative's cabinet in 2004, he inadvertently unearthed an elusive and surprising cycle that both serves as an homage to Brahms and reaffirms the technique and vision of the lesser-known German-Dutch composer himself.  Scored for voice, viola and piano, the cycle of five songs was written in 1926, and in Monday evening's concert, the selected pieces are well-matched both to the Frank Bridge songs that follow (for voice and viola), and for the performers who take on this program.

Cynthia Phelps is the principal violist for the New York Philharmonic, but rose to fame in the 1980s and 90s by winning every viola competition in the world.  Mezzo-soprano  Diana Tash is well-known to SoCal audiences for her beautiful tone and musical flair.  Armen Guzelimian is recognized among professional vocalists as one of the finest pianists who regularly works with singers (and he's good with other instruments, too).  The trio performs this coming Monday night in Malibu, at the home of Maria Newman, highly respected composer and daughter of film composer Alfred Newman.  Known as MAHMA, the Montgomery Art House for Music and Architecture is making waves with smart concerts and fine musicians, unusual pairings and some events matched with screenings of vintage films.  It's a good place to be.

LAURI D GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights

Seekers of great music know that it often happens off the beaten path, and that great spaces comes in many shapes and sizes.  (What city has proven that better than Los Angeles?)  This week includes several examples of SoCal's diversity, in our performers, our repertoire, our venues and in the way we approach musicmaking.

The big guns are in force, certainly: with SIMON RATTLE performing this weekend with the LA PHIL (joined by luminous mezzo MAGDALENA KOZENA for the unforgettable Rückert-Lieder) and the LA CHAMBER ORCHESTRA joining forces with the rapidly developing PASADENA MASTER CHORALE at Glendale's Alex Theater, grand music is plentiful.

There's plenty of opera in store, as well:  Saturday alone, REPERTORY OPERA COMPANY opens their 'Don Giovanni' in Pomona, VINEYARD TOURING OPERA continues their rounds with 'Tosca' in Santa Monica, LONG BEACH OPERA comes to LACMA for a sneak peek at their upcoming Golijov show, 'Ainadamar', and CELESTIAL OPERA continues their 'Lucia di Lammermoor' in South Pasadena.

There are several events that are particularly unusual, however: on Friday night, OPERAWORKS comes to Beverly Hills with a gala fundraiser, 'THE MET on Broadway II'.  Last year's event sold out, so if you can still get a seat, it will be an evening to remember.  So, too, will be 'Celebrating Shigemi' at Cal State Long Beach, a group recital marking the 25 years that SHIGEMI MATSUMOTO has taught at the school.  That same evening (Friday's a big one!), the ASIA AMERICA SYMPHONY presents an evening of vocal favorites from ANTOINE DIEL, one of the Three Filipino Tenors, at Zipper Hall in Downtown LA.  Decisions, decisions...

Like the 50s?  Sunday brings 'Automobilia' to life in Rancho Dominguez, celebrating and raising funds for the LONG BEACH CAMERATA SINGERS: this exclusive event is hosted by Rick Lorenzen, showcasing SoCal's foremost private collection of classic cars, and will feature food, wine and Broadway classics.  Poodle skirts optional. Monday night brings DIANA TASH, CYNTHIA PHELPS and ARMEN GUZELIMIAN to the Montgomery Art House for Music and Architecture (MAHMA) in Malibu.  Hearing these world-class performers together in such a beautiful space is a rare treat.  Get details here (and more in this week's issue of Next 7, coming out late Thursday):

Follow your bliss and be sure to stray from the everyday.  As always, thank you for supporting live singing!
