Boy, this week's a tough one: the weeks before Easter are full to bursting with unique ensembles, contemplative Lenten programs, choral favorites, and
beloved performance groups doing what they do best. But we also have several events that celebrate young, up-and-coming talent, which seems particularly appropriate now that spring has sprung:
Saturday evening, the winners of the
42nd Annual Opera Scholarship Competition, presented by the American Educators of Italian Origin United (AEIOU -- best acronym ever!), will present a concert at downtown LA's Italian Cultural Center. Tickets include a full Italian dinner and dancing, so wear great shoes and come hungry. Make your reservations quickly -- get details by clicking

Sunday includes a three-fer of young talent celebrations: First, the OPERA BUFFS present their
Spring 2012 Performers Showcase at the Colburn School, featuring a diverse program of songs and arias, entitled 'Music in the Air'. Get info by clicking
here.
Next, the LONG BEACH MOZART FESTIVAL celebrates its competition winners: pianists QUENNA NGUYEN and AUDREY YIM, and soprano ALYSSA WILLS. The three will perform the first half of the concert, followed by the host church's Sanctuary Choir and orchestra performing
Fauré's Requiem. The concert is free, but a freewill offering will be collected. For details,

Finally, and featuring the youngest performers of the bunch, the first of two concerts featuring winners of the 16th Annual LIANA COHEN MUSIC FESTIVAL takes place at Zipper Hall on Sunday evening. Budding artists ranging from 4th to 12th grade will perform piano, strings, winds or voice, as part of the family's ongoing efforts
"to encourage and inspire young musicians and artists". Admission is free. Details are available by clicking
here.
So many other events are available from an especially large range of ensembles. Check out the calendar to see what's available, including concerts from JOUYSSANCE, the ROSE ENSEMBLE, the WAGNER ENSEMBLE, ANGELES CHORALE, and ENSEMBLE LA RĘVEUSE. There are plenty more where those came from -- thank you for supporting the future of music, and as always, thank you for supporting live singing!
