Monday Evening Concerts brings Scandanavia to us with a pair of
horizon-broadening events

The storied and long-running Monday Evening Concerts started many decades ago, as a series of house concerts designed to bring luscious contemporary treats to the ears of the ordinary concertgoer.  After much time and several cycles of production evolution, this LA staple is now presenting primarily at downtown's Zipper Hall, and continues its founder's vision with eclectic and continually surprising programs, season after season.  This week's offerings are no exception, with an appearance from asamisimasa and a special event at the Goethe-Institut.

Formed in 2001 in Oslo, Norway, asamisimasa has expanded from its original incarnation to include six passionate performers, all dedicated to contemporary programming, but also performing the classics with modern flair.  Many pieces have been written for them, including four works featured on Monday's program, all US premieres.  Composers on this concert include post-war Italian Alberto Savinio, Norway native Oyvind Torvund, Danish contemporary Simon Steen-Andersen, British minimalist Laurence Crane and Norwegian innovator Trond Reinholdtsen. No "same old, same old" here.

To brush up on your Scandanavian contemporary for this exciting concert, a screening of the film, 'New Music Norway' will take place on Sunday morning (with a little pre-screening nosh), offering Angelenos a chance to learn more about the rich and fertile soil of the Norwegian avant garde.  Check out the websites below for more information.

LAURI D GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights

This is one great big week of opera!  'Simon Boccanegra' continues downtown, but f you missed our Twitter stream from last night's dress rehearsal at the Music Center, you can still get details  about Britten's hilarious 'Albert Herring' from LA OPERA's designated tweeters (including me) -- no Twitter account required.  The show opens on Saturday, and the company is offering special $25 tickets.  To check out the discussion and see what you don't want to miss, click here.

In more of a party mood?  'Die Fledermaus' opened at Pepperdine on Wednesday, and continues through Saturday.  Want to have a whale of a time?  (Sorry--I couldn't resist.)  Jake Heggie's 'Moby-Dick' is getting raves at SAN DIEGO OPERA, which really is closer than it seems.

But you can also get a look at the upcoming production from LONG BEACH OPERA by going 'From Paris to Zanzibar' on  Sunday, as part of their popular 'Coincidences' series.  More information on this fun, fascinating program is available by clicking here.

In north Orange County, LA MIRADA VOCAL ARTS offers a gala recital to support their rapidly growing company, taking a step away from opera to celebrate the song:  'No Arias, Please!' promises a diverse program and a great time, and you can get details by clicking here.

Of course, there's plenty more on the Calendar.  We're heading into the meaty part of the season, with more variety than even we can keep track of.    As always, thank you for supporting live singing!
