Long weekends, especially those caused by federal rather than "traditional" holidays, are the Bear Family of arts programming: sometimes they're almost bereft of possibilities, sometimes they're chock-full. This President's Day, however, seems just right, and there are a few events that scream for extra attention:
What do the Civil War, Jonathan Swift, Craigslist, Kurt Weill and Mahler have in common? Tenor JEFF GREIF and pianist TWYLA MEYER, in
a very eclectic recital that goes way beyond the Liederabend. This Saturday at 3pm, the duo will perform in Santa Monica, with a program that defies formula, and yet is supremely logical. (I, for one, can't wait!) For details,

Later that evening, favorite baritone VLADIMIR CHERNOV appears with the LOS ANGELES BALALAIKA ORCHESTRA, led by music director IRYNA ORLOVA. If you're not yet familiar with this infectious musical tradition, Zipper Hall is the perfect venue to provide your first foray into the music of
uniquely Russian instruments. You'll hear how this organization may serve a niche, but contributes beyond their specialty. For details and ticket info,

Longtime Lister LAURA HARRISON has always worn multiple hats, and her program in Long Beach on Sunday is the perfect vehicle show off both her jazz and classical chops. In '
Mash-up! Bach to Basie', the LONG BEACH BACH FESTIVAL hosts Harrison with drummer JIMMY BRANLY, bassist EDWIN LIVINGSTON, pianist JOHN PROULX and the amazing MARK SALTERS on continuo. For information,

The week also features concerts from MUSICA ANGELICA, the MIILLENNIUM CONSORT and HEATHER AND RYAN REITHMEIER, and continuing runs of BIOLA's '
Dialogues of the Carmelites' and REPERTORY OPERA COMPANY's '
Don Pasquale'. Lent starts next week, so spring is right around the corner. Stay warm, and
as always, thank you for supporting live singing!
