 Music in another form

The arts have always interconnected and influenced one another, whether it's a result of admiration or friendship (or rivalry) between purveyors of various art forms, or a sort of "contact high" that affects artists in the vicinity of one another. Film, however, has always particularly depended on music for help in telling its tale, from all the way back to the virtuoso organists of the silent film era, to the modern soundtrack sales that continue to bolster box office numbers.  We're so used to hearing music in movies, in fact, that its absence can be startling, such as the way pure ambient noise was used in parts of last year's Jane Eyre adaptation, or in some of the Dogme 95 ("Dogma") films, based on rules devised by a pair of Danish filmmakers which embrace austerity and aim to create more authentic films. (These have been inconsistently successful, with the lack of musical score noted by audiences as one of the most jarring 'features'.)

So, it somehow makes sense that an opera company might also host a film series.  Long Beach Opera, following their own drummer as always, has been hosting Sunday-morning flicks for a couple of years, partnering with The Art Theatre to provide free admission and the option of a $10 ticket to a pre-show lecture and munchies.  The proceedings start at a tolerable 11am, so some mild sleeping in isn't out of the question, and programs range from filmed opera (last year's Love for Three Oranges) to documentaries to films that feature music in a particularly fine way (next month's The Piano from Jane Campion).

LBOpera Cinema takes place several times each year.  This Sunday, artistic director Andreas Mitisek introduces a documentary that sets that tone for LBO's upcoming Poulenc/Martinu pairing.  Paris: The Luminous Years explores the period between 1905 and 1930, when the city was the center of modernist thought and development.  Get on their mailing list for regular updates, and get there early for a great seat.

LAURI D GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights

Don't be scared.

Hwlloween is here (as are All Saints', All Souls', and the Day of the Dead), and although this week's concerts are unlikely to make you jump out of your skin (with the possible exception of the Vampire's Ball on Friday!), everything on the calendar seems to be bolstered up by a little extra grandness:

Opera is here in spades, starting with CENTER STAGE OPERA's program of concert-style 'Operatic Masterpieces' on Friday night. This well-mixed selection of favorites is perfect for the seasoned buff, or as a toe-dipping enterprise for the newbie. It all takes place at CSO's beautiful home at Canoga Park's Madrid Theatre, and you can get details by clicking here.

CSUN brings a new twist to Mozart's 'Cosi fan tutte', setting it in the guise of a 1970s game show. Hailed (with tongue firmly in cheek) as 'The perfect opera for those who prefer their laughter sandwiched with a slice of wry," Northridge students will sing in Italian, but supertitles will keep you abreast of the whimsical and rather convoluted plotlines. Directed by ZEFFIN QUINN HOLLIS and conducted by opera honcho DAVID AKS, this unusual production continues through November 6. For details, click here.

CHORALE BEL CANTO joins OPERA A LA CARTE's veteran principal performers in a rollicking performance of 'Pirates of Penzance' in Downey on Saturday afternoon. Also on Saturday, LA METROPOLITAN OPERA begins their run of 'Carmen' at the adorable Church in Ocean Park. And at the Broad in Santa Monica, barihunk SIMON KEENLYSIDE proves that appearances are sometimes just decorative packaging for a truly stellar voice.

For the less operatically inclined, there are concerts from Martin Neary's MILLENNIUM CONSORT SINGERS in Newport Beach and the WELSH CHOIR in Pasadena. Also, ALTA LYRICA offers two performances of an idiosyncratic program of music for voice, flute and/or piano from France and North and South America. They'll be in Irvine on Sunday and at The Wild Beast at CalArts on Tuesday. For details on the Irvine concert, click here.

NEXT WEEK:   More of MUSIC OF THE PEOPLE, a 40th birthday for PACIFIC CHORALE, and plenty more.

Have a wonderful week -- own your character, stay well-lit, and easy on the candy. Between the parties, thank you for supporting live singing!
