Aesopera

An opera with at least five morals

You remember Ęsop.  Most of us know him from the simplified life lessons told to children, ending with "the moral of the story..."  He was a slave in 5th-century BCE Greece who devised animal-populated fables that entertain while cleverly offering life lessons in disguise.  The Boy Who Cried Wolf and The Tortoise and the Hare are both attributed to Ęsop, as well as more than 600 other stories.  (An extensive online collection is available here.)

The fact is, fables are a time-honored method of teaching problem-solving, ethics, even psychology, and it's unclear whether Ęsop actually composed all of the extant fables from that period, or whether he actually existed at all.  But the stories survive, and composer Jonathan Price, with librettists Jeff Goode and Jan Michael Alejandro, have created a new chamber opera from these teaching tales with a very modern twist, addressing topics "from political apathy to gay rights".  Directed by Kirk Arnold-Smith & Alison Eliel-Kalmus, and under the music direction & piano accompaniment of Leonardo Sciolis, the production taps the talents of several local singers and promises a challenge to the mind as well as music for the soul.  Performed just one night only at Pasadena's historic Blinn House, call for reservations now.  Once you get there, you might even learn something.

LAURI D GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights

If you think there's nothing to do this weekend, you're not paying attention.  With no possible way of covering everything, I'd like to focus on just a few particular treasures:

HORIZON MUSIC GROUP is a new organization led by young and promising artistic director CHRISTIAN CAMPOS.  The choir and orchestra have committed to performing all of Bach's glorious motets during the 2011 calendar year, and this weekend's concerts place 'Jesu Meine Freude', the last selection of this ambitious project, at the center of a deeply moving and contemplative program entitled 'in the midst of life'.  With two free concerts in honor of the tenth anniversary of 9/11, HMG has created a powerful response to an horrific event in history, and also includes works by Purcell, Schütz, John Sheppard, and James MacMillan.  In a recent email, Campos writes, "This concert features a program of intense reflection and supplication, respecting the memory of those fallen and seeking to comfort those of us left behind."  The program will be performed Friday and Saturday, in Redondo Beach and Long Beach, respectively.  Admission is free -- no tickets required.  For more information, click here.

The ever-innovative BLACKBIRD MUSIC PROJECT matches Shostakovich and Berio in their season opener on Saturday, bringing the glorious tones of ARIEL PISTURINO and FRANCES BENNETT to Santa Ana.  This is an unusual opportunity to hear both Shostakovich's 'Seven Romances by Alexander Blok' and Berio's 'Folk Songs' (perhaps his finest work), and you won't want to miss this scintillating program pairing.  For details and ticket info, click here.

Music history teachers love to compare the work of composers with that of their followers, but these mashups usually take place in the classroom, and with the distance of years between works and listeners.  It is far less often that we hear such lineage side-by-side, live and from two living and active composers.  JACARANDA presents 'A Vast Clearing', a program featuring two works by the iconic and enduring PHILIP GLASS (one a West Coast premiere), introduced by a composition from his longtime assistant, NICO MUHLY.  Muhly is a current "composer of the moment", but his astonishing (and at least partially Twitter-powered) rise to prominence suggests that this cheeky Brit is no flash in the pan.  With first-rate performers and fascinating repertoire, Jacaranda has created yet another unique program that you'll regret missing if you must.  Don't take the chance -- click here.

In a week filled with extraordinary modern music, a new opera is particularly welcome.  Enter 'Aesopera' from composer JONATHAN PRICE and librettists JEFF GOODE and JAN MICHAEL ALEJANDRO.  A brand-new chamber work inspired by five fables of guess-who, the show casts what are usually told as children's stories in a more adult vein, mining deeper meaning and tackling "subjects from political apathy to gay rights".  With just one performance on Saturday in Pasadena, this would be a good week to finish that cloning project you've been meaning to get to...  For details, click here.

More? Of course! There's new music at the Brand Library on Sunday, with 'You and Music for Two' from MUSIC ON ARGYLE.  'A Concert for World Peace' honors the memory of martyred journalist Daniel Pearl.  Then there are these....

CONTINUING:  The World Festival of Sacred Music continues at various venues through Sunday; 'Candide' in Westchester; 'Il Trovatore' in Pomona; and CENTER STAGE OPERA's 'Amici della music' (monthly) in Chatsworth.

NEXT WEEK:  Early music ensemble CAPPELLA GLORIANA visits from San Diego; DE ANGELIS VOCAL ENSEMBLE heads north to perform at the Cathedral in downtown LA; a new opera company emerges with LA MIRADA VOCAL ARTS; and JOUYSSANCE goes very early with Machaut's 'Messe de Nostre Dame', the first complete Mass setting.

Many more concerts and recitals abound on the Calendar -- take a cyberstroll and find something just for you.  Thank you for supporting live singing!
