Bridges that reach across centuries
Some concerts present such an opportunity that they merit special attention. This is, of course, the purpose of this weekly feature. But in this case, next Thursday's event at St. John's Cathedral is so exciting that I'm featuring it a week ahead of time, with the humble request that any church choir directors reading this column consider canceling next week's conflicting rehearsals and send their choirs en masse to a choral event that is sure to delight and enlighten their singers. (If I'm not there myself next week, you'll know that my boss didn't buy it. Fingers crossed!)
As much as I adore Voxfire and applaud the work of Kan Zaman, it is their subject matter that makes this particular concert especially scheduleworthy, as much as the collaboration itself. The medieval music of Spain is lush, evocative and exotic in a way that is quite unlike other Western music of the period. This period of almost magical artistic growth is all but lost now, and to hear these songs performed by these performers is truly a treat. Do what you can to take advantage of this rare musical opportunity, and discover a little-known world of diverse vocal art.

Southern California Vocal Events LAURI D GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights While some may have mixed feelings about the term 'lecture recital', tonight's annual Paderewski event at USC is sure to challenge any bland sentiments. Hosted by the school's Polish Music Center, this year's event offers a chance to hear composer PAWEL LUKASZEWSKI lead and speak about his music, with performances by baritone DAN GIBBS, soprano SEWAN HOWSEPIAN, pianist GRACE CHUNG, and the VOCAL ENSEMBLE OF THE POLISH MUSIC CENTER, led by conductor and faculty member NICK STRIMPLE. The concert is free -- now you just have to go! For details, click here.
It always amazes me to find that so many people who love Liszt's piano works are unaware that he also wrote lovely songs. Sunday offers an opportunity hear both, in honor of the fiery virtuoso's bicentennial year. soprano CAMILLE KING and pianist MIKHAIL KORZHEV perform 'A Bicentennial Commemoration' at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Beverly Hills. For details, click here.
Next week, THE ENGLISH CONCERT comes to Disney Hall on Tuesday, and the WORLD FESTIVAL OF SACRED MUSIC continues with 'Secrets on the Alhambra' on Wednesday and 'Ornament of the World' on Thursday, a program celebrating medieval Spanish song and featuring the beloved SoCal trio VOXFIRE and the Arabic ensemble KAN ZAMAN, performing at St. John's Episcopal Cathedral near USC (south of Downtown LA). For more info, see this week's Next 7 newsletter (linked below), or click here.
CONTINUING: LA OPERA's runs of 'Eugene Onegin' and 'Cosi fan tutte' are still available, and the WORLD FESTIVAL OF SACRED MUSIC runs through 10/16.
Verdi's 'Il Trovatore' from REPERTORY OPERA COMPANY, performing in Pomona on the next two Saturdays. For details, click here.
Bernstein's 'Candide' in Westchester, from the KENTWOOD PLAYERS. Click here.
NEXT WEEK is huge, with more vocal performances than we can shake a stick at. Pace yourself, and thank you for supporting live singing!
