LAURI D GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights
What's the opposite of full swing? The summer doldrums are here, and although there's less activity to be found, the events around town are light and airy like a delicious breeze. As we're covering three weeks in this issue, here's a quick survey of what's coming up:
SATURDAY the 2nd, REPERTORY OPERA COMPANY introduces you to 'The Manly Men of Opera' in Pomona, with a bushel of basses and low notes galore. This benefit for ROC's Young Artist Program puts all of their low-voiced wonders to work in an unusual program of arias, accompanied by pianist and music director BRIAN FARRELL. Tickets are $30. For more information, click here.
On the 3rd and 9th, the CALIFORNIA PHILHARMONIC brings their eclectic style to Walt Disney Hall and the Arboretum, respectively. Orchestra, chorale and soloists will perform 'Andrew Lloyd Webber Meets Puccini', a mixed bag of vocal favorites. For information and tickets, click here.
Next week, the NORTHWEST BOYCHOIR comes through SoCal as part of their summer tour, performing Friday through Sunday in Beverly Hills, Irvine and Hermosa Beach. This elite treble choir is based in Seattle, part of the larger, Grammy-nominated organization led by conductor JOSEPH CRNKO. The tour is the 21st in the ensemble's 37-year history. For the press release and more information, click here.
There are princesses, and there are princesses. We particularly like the ones who sponsor choral music, like Princess Mary of Denmark. The Danes have a long history of exceptional standards in music and culture, and the THISTED CHURCH CHOIR OF MEN & BOYS is the perfect example of that tradition's continuation. Performing on July 10 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown LA, works by Vivaldi, Britten and Haydn will be joined by compositions by Danish composers Rued Langgaard and Peter Lange-Müller. Suggested donation is $10, and inexpensive, secure parking is available on the premises. For details, click here.
The following weekend offers a lovely excuse to head north for the Opera Showcase at MUSIC ACADEMY OF THE WEST in Santa Barbara, but also an enticement to stay closer to home, with PACIFIC LYRIC ASSOCIATION's mouth-watering 'Musica Paella' in Santa Monica. The pièce de résistance? Puccini's ever-popular 'Turandot' at the HOLLYWOOD BOWL. It's all win-win.
Enjoy your summer, wear a hat, and thank you for supporting live singing!
