The Little Fest

that Could

Corona del Mar's

Baroque Festival

lives on!

Some dream projects start and fizzle.  Some endure. For a while there, it looks like the beloved Baroque Music Festival in the tiny hamlet of Corona del Mar was going to endure, then fizzle.  With the announcement last year of founding artistic director Burton Karson's retirement, with no successor immediately at hand, it appeared that this summer treat was done, after 30 years of musicmaking.

But they're getting by with help from their friends:  John Alexander is bringing his ensemble to Newport Beach this weekend for the 2011 Gala Concert, the single event on this year's schedule, as a benefit and precursor to ambitious plans for 2012 and beyond.  Pacific Chorale's John Alexander Singers join the Festival Orchestra for works by Corelli, Handel and both of the major Scarlattis.  The full program is listed here.  Although the published program doesn't list soloists, a little birdie told us that Lister and fabulous mezzo I-Chin Feinblatt will be featured during the program, as well as other fine singers from the ensemble.

Show your support. Please forward this to friends, go if you can, and encourage Baroque fans to donate even small amounts by mail or through the festival's website.  This festival has consistently supported the List, and several of our members have truly enjoyed working with them.  With classical festivals struggling everywhere, now is the time to show up for the ones you care about.  (Besides, who wouldn't want to be in Newport Beach on a glorious Sunday afternoon?)

This column appears weekly during the regular season, as cross-posted from the Clickable Chamber Music Newsletter.

During the summer, that newsletter goes into reduced production, and columns will appear here as available.

In the meantime, please browse our calendar, tell friends about both newsletters, and keep us posted.

Thank you for supporting live singing!
