Opening doors at Make Music Pasadena
FUMC Pasadena makes room for classical & more
So well hidden, they're hidden in plain sight: Now in its fourth spectacular year, Make Music Pasadena is putting on not just one show, but more than 100 performances at 26 "venues", including churches, an outdoor amphitheater, sidewalks, courtyards, bars, and at least one rooftop. Most of the acts come from the pop, rock, jazz and blues worlds, but the city makes an effort each year to attract quality classical acts, as well: this year, there will be chamber music on the City Hall steps, the LA Children's Chorus at Pasadena Pres (their home base), and the Dulcet Singers at First United Methodist Church.
Why do these performances matter so much? Because all of these concerts are free and attended by a very wide variety of music lovers. Presented in part by the non-profit Levitt Pavilions, this event is part of an ongoing campaign to bring free music to communities, reflecting their diversity with exciting and varied performer rosters. It's an enormous opportunity to share our love of classical music and opera with folks who we might not reach otherwise.
 So, here's your assignment:
- GO -- Attend at least one of the classical events on the schedule, and take someone who's not a regular classical concertgoer. With so many events available, you can find something more familiar as well, and broaden their horizons along the way. This will also show the city and the performers that the classical audience has a great big voice!
- Offer feedback -- Next week, send an email to contact@makemusicpasadena.org and tell the MMP folks how much you enjoyed the program you attended. Be specific, with performer names, the venue and time. The more they hear from classical fans, the more they'll make space for us.
- Participate next year -- Whether you're one performer or represent a group, send an email to contact@makemusicpasadena.org and ask to be added to their mailing list for performers. Better yet, put a note in your calendar to check their website around January 2012. Then start working up your proposal: they're looking for just about anything short and musical -- wouldn't it be great to have a short opera, a themed set of art songs, or a multimedia cantata with chamber ensemble grace the schedule in 2012? Start brainstorming, make it happen, and let us know where you'll be!
