Bringing distant needs
within reach
You've heard of Bosnia. You might even have read the news stories, and not just the headlines, giving you an understanding of the conflict there and the devastating results for its population, especially for women. But it's hard to know what you can do to help, especially when headlines fade so quickly, and another story takes precedence.
Now's your chance: organizations like the Bosana Foundation raise money to help today's victims and prevent future atrocities. This feature-rich event includes beautiful music, talented performers, the gratification of doing good, and even the thrill of the hunt at what looks like a juicy silent auction. Helping can be fun.

LAURI D. GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights
Festival season has begun! With the OJAI MUSIC FESTIVAL starting today (Thursday), SONGFEST offering their first summer concerts this weekend, and MUSIC ACADEMY OF THE WEST gearing up on the 20th, there's no lack of opportunity to check out young talent and new music. The next few weeks also boast juicy recitals (Operatuneities, Saturday), operatic premieres from CENTER STAGE, and MESOPOTAMIAN operas, and very entertaining (and worthwhile) fundraisers. How to choose, how to choose? This is just a sampling, so be sure to check out the calendar and get the big picture!
TONIGHT, please take a trip to La Caņada to hear the wonderful quartet from ST. GEORGE'S CHURCH as they sing to raise money for Alzheimer's research. This program, entitled 'Songs of Love and Laughter', is free to attend, but any donations will matched, up to a total of $5,000, by a generous matching grant from the Baxter Healthcare Foundation. It's a wonderful opportunity to double the impact of your money while supporting a cause that touches just about everyone. (The music will be good, too!) For information, click here.
FRIDAY marks the first performance of 'Marie's Orchard', the highly anticipated world premiere from CENTER STAGE OPERA. This new work is composed by PHILIP WESTIN, with a libretto by CSO artistic director DYLAN F. THOMAS, this adaptation of Willa Cather's 'O Pioneers!' combines a lyrical score with a story of love in the face of tremendous obstacles. It's the definition of good opera! For more information on the production and to purchase tickets, click here.
SATURDAY, don't miss OPERA A LA CARTE's benefit performance of 'Trial by Jury', one of Gilbert & Sullivan's most charming shows. Taking place at the beautiful Neighborhood Church and Garden in Pasadena (right next to the historic Gamble House), it promises to be an evening of gorgeous singing, lots of fun and, if you show up early, delicious food and drink. For details and tickets, click here.
'The Blur' brings comic flair to a very modern opera, with corporate intrigue, technological espionage and thoughts on 'How to Marry a Billionaire'. Whether it works or not, you'll have to see for yourself... but this new work by PETER WING HEALEY promises a very good time. For details, click here.
On SUNDAY, two of our Listers make beautiful music together as soprano/bari couple HEATHER & RYAN REITHMEIER perform selections 'From Footlights to Film' with pianist JANELLE TAG in Rolling Hills Estates. This free concert is just the thing to chill out and wrap up a hectic week. For more information, click here.
WEDNESDAY brings a long-awaited work from DAVID LANG, as 'The Difficulty of Crossing a Field' comes to LONG BEACH OPERA. Based on a story by Ambrose Bierce, this tale of a man's disappearance in the slave-era South has been called an 'astonishing work', and continues LBO's well-established history of creating new and relevant opera. It's not a long show (the original story takes up only one page, after all), and with three performances, make a special effort to fit it in. For details and ticket info, click here.
COMING UP: As we head into summer, CCMN goes into a less frequent publication schedule, so please take a moment to peruse the Calendar and plan ahead. Next weekend boasts performances of the popular 'Music of the People' programs by KAREN BENJAMIN, CEDRIC BERRY, ALAN CHAPMAN and VICTORIA KIRSCH. Sundays Live at LACMA hosts a very special memorial concert for JAMES SMITH, longtime guitar guru at USC, with some of the best picking and singing talents in the area. Take time to get to at least one of the excellent SONGFEST concerts in Malibu -- perhaps the world premiere from LIBBY LARSEN on the 19th? But whatever you choose...
Thank you for supporting live singing!
