Horizon Music Group lends inventive spirit to classical programming
That big metal building downtown doesn't have a monopoly on precocious young conductors. Christian Campos is a bright young talent with real vision, and with the launch of Horizon Music Group last year, he's got two ensembles and real potential.
The two groups, the Horizon Chamber Choir and the Horizon Chamber Orchestra, are comprised of fine professional musicians cherry-picked from the area's best performing organizations. With a focus on showcasing new talent and arts education, this new enterprise is positioned to make a real impact on the local scene. Watch out!

LAURI D. GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights
Memorial Day weekend is always a little light on the concerts, but the stalwart ensembles offering music events this week are pulling out all the stops, with great music, very special performers and unusual repertoire. Put down your barbecue fork long enough to savor a luscious performance, and don't forget to thank the troops!
Thursday night, the energetic and evocative YUVAL RON ENSEMBLE joins forces with WHIRLING DERVISH AZIZ, Yuval's incredible instrumentalists and vocals by cantor RAPHAEL SKOURI, MAYA HADDI and SUKAHWAT ALI KHAN. Exotic? Yes. But if you're not familiar with this style of music, this is the group to introduce you. For more information, click here.
The LA PHIL continues its 'Brahms Unbound' series with concerts featuring soprano (and local darling) JESSICA RIVERA through the weekend and alto rising CARIN GILFRY on a Chamber Music program on Tuesday night. For details, see the Lister Calendar (linked below) or click here.
Friday night is the first of two performances of PASADENA PRO MUSICA's season finale: 'Favorite Opera Choruses'. This creative group puts the focus on the chorus with works from Purcell to Puccini. The program repeats on Sunday. For details, click here.
Saturday night and Sunday, the HORIZON MUSIC GROUP is 'Always Singing' with a varied choral program that mixes Bach, Palestrina and Tallis with modern marvels Tavener, Willan and others. The program also features 'O magnum mysterium' from local composer (and Lister) MATTHEW BROWN. Directed by the very talented CHRISTIAN CAMPOS, this newish ensemble is one to watch. For details on these performances, click here.
Also Saturday and Sunday, the SAN FERNANDO VALLEY MASTER CHORALE offers a Memorial Day program that includes three substantial choral works fraught with meaning: LEONARD BERNSTEIN's 'Chichester Psalms', the 'Mass in G' from RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS and RANDALL THOMPSON's 'Testament of Freedom'. What a lovely and inspiring way to make more of the holiday than just food and movies! For details, click here.
Sunday marks the premiere of 'The Mixed Blessings', a new work for chorus and handbells by local composer DAVID AVSHALOMOV. Part of the 'Dulcis Memoria' concert of remembrance from CANTORI DOMINO, the program also includes a new work by DALE JERGENSON, as well as pieces by Barber, Tavener and Jonathan Willcocks. For details, click here.
COMING UP: Check the Calendar for details on Brahms' 'German Requiem' in the Palisades, 'The Magic Flute' in Pasadena, an operatic twofer from CASA ITALIANA, and a musical, magical fundraiser in Woodland Hills. The first weekend in June has a lot going on. Since the Clickable newsletter will be going into reduced production over the summer, be sure to also sign up for Next 7, our weekly vocal events newsletter, for reminders and our weekly 'Hidden Gem' feature.
