From the heart
Creative programs and community spirit are the future of choral music
Good news for classical music: Cambridge University has officially declared it relevant. (I'm sure you've all been waiting with bated breath to hear what they thought.) But classical fans in Southern California haven't had cause for doubt, as we have so many performing organizations in this area which are not only active, but innovating with new music, new concepts and new ways of connecting with audiences. Better yet, the local classical scene is far from limited to professional and semi-pro ensembles: dozens of community-based groups are going strong, celebrating music's universal nature in the best testament of why classical music matters. The Orange County Women's Chorus is an excellent example of singers taking matters into their own hands, making music their own, and having a truly great time in the process. The bottom line: this group has fun, and under the direction of Eliza Rubinstein, they're also supporting local composers. This Saturday's program sports a new setting of Walter de la Mare's poetry: the work is titled Music Sounds, by film and concert composer Sharon Farber. The premiere is the icing on a diverse program featuring songs by Irving Fine, Rebecca Clarke, and Nathan Christensen. It's a great way to finish off their season, and a good chance for you to get excited about a new group. Eat, Pray, Love! Orange County Women's Chorus Saturday, May 21, 7pm St. Wilfrid of York Episcopal Church 18631 Chapel Lane, Huntington Beach Map & Directions Tickets at the door: Adults $20, Students & Seniors $15 OCWC website Tickets Event listing

LAURI D. GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights
A performance of music from a favorite composer is a bit like comfort food: it feels like home, even evokes surprising memories. An unfamiliar work by the same composer can be an exciting journey through sound and story, and several opportunities for such a journey crop up this week.
On Friday, Saddleback College presents MOZART's 'Mitridate', an opera written when the composer prodigy was only fourteen years old. Although his youth was an understandable concern, the work was performed 21 times with considerable success when it first emerged, and was then left on the shelf by the operatic world until its revival in the 20th century. The performance takes place in Newport Beach, and proceeds benefit the college's vocal program. For more information, call (949) 582-4656 or click here.
On the other hand, some folks like their newness truly new, and the world premiere of 'Blood on the Dining Room Floor' should do the trick. UCLA Opera presents a new chamber version of JONATHAN SHEFFER's opera, placing the enigmatic and fascinating GERTRUDE STEIN at the center of a French murder mystery. This work will be part of the incoming Classical Singer Convention on Friday, with four public performances on Saturday and Sunday. For more information, click here.
The CALIFORNIA QUARTET bridges the brand-new with the fairly recent past with a program featuring the premiere of a 'New work for baritone and piano' by MATTHEW TOMMASINI as well as works by 20th century composers CHINARY UNG, ERICH KORNGOLD, SAMUEL BARBER, and some guy named GIUSEPPE VERDI. The chamber music program is enticing throughout, but we vocal nuts will be especially drawn by KORNGOLD's gorgeous 'Five songs', sung in the lush baritone of local wonder JAMES MARTIN SCHAEFER. This concert series is one to watch. For more information, click here.
There's a lot going on this weekend, from CHORALE BEL CANTO's Verdi 'Requiem' and an intimate Evensong service in Monrovia, to VOX FEMINA's 'Mamma Mia!' Sing-Along on Saturday night. (The movie is so silly, and some of the film's singing so terrible, that the event is bound to be a blast.) Catch your last chance to see 'Moscow, Cherry Town' from LONG BEACH OPERA, or 'La Boheme' from REPERTORY OPERA COMPANY. You can hear Brahms in San Pedro or Mozart in La Cañada. Let your soul swing with DUKE ELLINGTON's 'Sacred Service' from the LA MASTER CHORALE, or focus on the words with PACIFIC CHORALE's 'A Poet's Voice'. See the calendar for these events and more. But whatever you do, don't stay home!
As always, thank you for supporting live singing!
