Bold Fearless Good & Fair

Well-earned titles

Somehow, 'Phil, Jack, Phil and Chuck' didn't quite cut it.  The Valois Dukes of Burgundy are so wreathed in tales of legendary spirit that even 700 years later, they are still known as Philip the Bold (1364-1404), John the Fearless (1404-19), Philip the Good (1419-67), and Charles the Bold (1467-77).  The last designation in the concert's title belongs to Philip the Fair, the ultimate heir to the remaining holdings after the Battle of Nancy in 1477.  (Apparently, he was the family hottie.)

Land and power aside, these audacious rulers are important to music history for their lavish support of the arts, and their passion for big sound, colorful arrangements and "flashy" instrumentation. They encouraged the artists of their time to veer away from the sedate, string-based sound previously setting the standard.  Their composrs pushed the envelope and built a broader palette for future generations of musicians, changing the flavor and direction of music for centuries. Over three performances, starting Friday, Cappella (part of the Los Angeles Chamber Singers) is waving the Burgundian standard.  The program features works by master composers Guillaume de Machaut, Guillaume Dufay, Josquin des Prez, and Antoine Brumel.  Led by director Peter Rutenberg and sung by twelve of the finest ensemble singers in the area,  It may change your view of early music.

It begs just one question:

     What will your title be?

  LAURI D. GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights

No "same old, same old" here, unless the creative programs from groups like JACARANDA and DE ANGELIS VOCAL ENSEMBLE have become the norm.  (Wouldn't that be a beautiful world?)  Local organizations and individual artists are finding new ways to treat their audiences to the wealth of great music in the vocal repertoire, and there are several choice examples coming up:

This weekend starts early, with several great events on Thursday night.  The Young Artists from LA OPERA continue their run of '25 Recitals for 25 Seasons' with a noontime concert at City of Hope in Duarte.  This series has just a few dates left, so check the calendar and find a time to meet these talented up-and-comers.  For more information, click here.

Thursday is also Cinco de Mayo, and the music of composer MARIA NEWMAN helps celebrate independence in 'Mystique: A Journey of Magic & Mystery'.  The program is the L.A. debut of soprano DOMINIKA ZAMARA, and also features Lister tenor CHRISTOPHER M. ALLPORT.  The program has been performed around the world, and this first American presentation is peppered with high-powered local talent, performing at the historic Warner Grand in San Pedro.  See the calendar for more from these artists at MALIBU FRIENDS OF MUSIC over the weekend, but for more information on the May 5th event, click here.

Friday evening starts a series of new concerts from LOS ANGELES CHAMBER SINGERS' CAPPELLA, presenting 'Bold Fearless Good & Fair', a concert outlining Burgundian history through early music.  Featured composers are MACHAUT, DUFAY, JOSQUIN and BRUMEL, and as always, director PETER RUTENBERG has gathered a group of truly fine SoCal singers.  For more information on the three concerts, click here.

If you couldn't attend on Wednesday, don't miss 'Finding Paradise Lost', a pastiche performance that brings together the work of GOETHE and WOLF to tell a modern story of devastating loss.  Created by USC students as part of two combined courses, this very special project is led by instructors LISA SYLVESTER and KEN CAZAN, and is part of a new music series at the gorgeous facilities at Pasadena's Boston Court.  For more details, including links to directions and tickets, click here.

Saturday night also boasts another rather spectacular program from JACARANDA, the Santa Monica music series that has developed a big influence footprint in SoCal and beyond.  This concert, called 'Magic Realism II', features soprano LUCY SHELTON and the DENALI QUARTET, joining Jacaranda regulars, all headed up by conductor MARK ALAN HILT.  A hefty group of 65 musicians performs beautiful and evocative Latin American music from GINASTERA, CHAVEZ, REVUELTAS and VILLA-LOBOS, in a percussion-focused concert that will leave you dancing all the way home.  Details and ticket information are available by clicking here.

COMING UP:  DE ANGELIS returns to San Juan Capistrano with 'Nocturnes', the 'Three Piggy Be-Bopera' debuts in Santa Clarita, and soprano recitals abound, with separate offerings from LORI STINSON, COURTNEY HUFFMAN and 'SOPRANO SYNERGY'.  But wait, there's more -- LONG BEACH OPERA premieres its next ambitious project with 'Moscow, Cherry Town'.  Life is good.

As always, thanks for supporting live singing!
