'Joan at the coronation of Charles VII' (1854) by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres

Chicks

with guts

Well behaved women rarely make history.

--Eleanor Roosevelt

These ain't no pale, wilting flowers:  Joan of Arc, for instance, was a warrior, a visionary, and one of the most beloved characters in French history.  In her short life of only nineteen years, this humble 15th-century peasant girl led major victories against the English in the Hundred Years' War and helped to place Charles VII on the throne, bringing relief to France after many decades of devastating fighting against the English, a mad monarch and much political infighting.  She was eventually captured, sold to the English and burned at the stake for her troubles (and, most important, for the crime of being an audacious woman), but whatever can be said, she lived her life with passion, conviction and tremendous courage.

Women of Passion flyerThis is only one of the fabulous females celebrated in song by The Verdi Chorus this weekend.  With selections from Verdi's Giovanna d'Arco, Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana and Kálmán's  Gräfin Mariza (Countess Maritza), director Anne Marie Ketchum leads choir, soloists and pianist Laraine Stivers-Madden as they delve into the characters that make 'well behaved' far less desirable.

An impressive line-up of featured soloists includes soprano Monica Schober, tenor (and Lister) Robert MacNeil, and baritone Joseph Lodato.  If you can, spring for reserved seats, as you won't want to miss a thing.

  LAURI D. GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights

Two pairs of concerts, presumably matched unintentionally, show great themes in different ways this week:

First, two concerts focus on the accomplishments of musical women, with 'Women of Passion' from the VERDI CHORUS and 'Intercultural Conversations' by VOX FEMINA.  Saturday at 4pm, Vox's free concert honors women of a variety of different cultures, celebrating diversity and great music.  At 7:30pm, the operatically inclined will be drawn to the Verdians' selections showing strong female characters from opera works.  (This program will be repeated on Sunday.) Since one is free and the two events don't overlap, it's like a twofer: take advantage, and attend both!

Then, two Los Angeles events on Sunday commemorate Jewish music, in honor of Yom HaShoah, the annual day of Holocaust remembrance.  Both events are free:

The Los Angeles Jewish Choral Festival takes place at 7pm at Leo Baeck Temple, featuring a combined choir of several groups, appearances by conductors DR. NOREEN GREEN and DR. MICHAEL ISAACSON.

For more information, click here.

Sinai Temple also hosts a special event with 'From Death to Hope', a new musical based on VIKTOR FRANKL's landmark book, 'Man's Search for Meaning'.  This show is also offered on Monday night.

Other goodies?  You won't want to miss IAN BOSTRIDGE in Orange County on Friday, OPERAWORKS' 'The Met on Broadway' funder on Saturday, LONG BEACH OPERA's next 'Coincidence', or a whole slew of fabulous soloists with the PALISADES SYMPHONY on Sunday.  Other offerings this week are simply fascinating for their innovative spirit:  Check out 'Finding Paradise Lost' at USC on Wednesday the 4th, or 'Mystique' at San Pedro's Warner Grand Theatre, in celebration of Cinco de Mayo (Thursday).  Check the calendar for these options and more.

As always, thank you for supporting live singing!
