A little Mozart,
from the early days
You think you know Mozart? Well, how about an opera written at the tender age of 18, while he was studying in Italy? A work that was presumed complete only in his later German adaptation, until the Italian score cropped up almost 200 years after it was written? 'La finta' may be one of Wolfgang's lesser-known works, but relegating it to 'juvenalia' would be a mistake. This work has charm and an underlying thread of wackiness that makes the experience a lot of fun. (Oh, and the music's good, too...) LAURI D. GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights
Got your ears on? With Easter looming, most musicians are busy with the plethora of seasonal services, so the calendar is a little light. But what's listed shows great promise!
First, Mozart's lesser-known opera, 'La Finta Giardiniera' comes to USC in a production that will stretch the talents of all involved. Director KEN CAZAN brings the story to life, but the program's very able BRENT MCMUNN and their gaggle of student up-and-comers is sure to provide an entertaining evening with this farcical little gem. Performances Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday make it easy to find the time for you. Get your tickets early -- click: http://www.usc.edu/tickets
One of the most beautiful and beloved choral masterworks in the repertoire will be performed FREE in Pasadena on Friday, as Gabriel Fauré's 'Requiem' comes to Pasadena Presbyterian Church. Directed by DR. TIMOTHY HOWARD, the Kirk Choir will be beefed up with guest singers from the surrounding community, and the concert features the considerable gifts of soprano JUDITH SIIRILA and MICHAL CONNOR. The program also includes a motet cycle by Francis Poulenc and a lovely work for string orchestra from Sir Edward Elgar. Come early for the pre-concert lecture, and use what you learn to connect to the music on an even deeper level. There is no charge for admission, but you can learn more about the event by clicking: http://bit.ly/dOZBm2
Have you checked out the 'Met in HD' screenings yet? Lauri's List is hosting a small get-together on Wednesday, April 27, for the encore screening of 'Le Comte Ory'. This is a Rossini opera that hasn't been done at the Met before, and it's a racy little romp that puts some of the best 'Rossini voices' through their paces: JUAN DIEGO FLOREZ, JOYCE DIDONATO and DIANA DAMRAU earn their keep beautifully, and Florez actually helped deliver his new baby boy less than an hour before this performance was filmed... How can you miss that? Please join us, and find out what all the opera-in-movie-theater fuss is about. (Hint: it's just plain fun!) Last, but not at all least, is the simple fact that this week is chock full of religious events, most of which include some special musical programming. Whether or not you're a fan of church, temple or whatever, this is a rich week for great music. It's Passion Week (which means this Sunday is Easter), and Passover started on Monday night. So the air is filled with the rich sound of tradition, and it's difficult to resist waxing a bit rhapsodic. Check your local paper or the website for a church near you for service schedules. Watch for special, once-a-year rituals like Tenebrae (which ends in the dark) or the Easter vigil (when the priests get to play with fire), as these services tend to include a lot of music, and will really give you a chance to step outside everyday existence.
CONTINUING: 'Songs for a New World' and another installment in LA Opera's '25 Recitals for 25 Years' look enticing, and two more performances of the family-friendly 'German Opera Tales' are available next week. Worth checking out...
COMING UP: Get back in the swing of things with a new 'Coincidence' from LONG BEACH OPERA and a visit to choral music's feminine side from the VERDI CHORUS. 'La Boheme' comes to REPERTORY OPERA, and CAPPELLA returns to Hermosa Beach. Stay tuned, as we'll explore these further next week.
As always, enjoy the ride, and thank you for supporting live singing!
