LAURI D. GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights
It's the last weekend before singers and their cohorts get crazy with Passion Week and Easter services, so the calendar is particularly full of myriad events you'll simply love.
Uplifting concerts and recitals abound, with DUBOIS' 'Seven Last Words of Christ' in Pacific Palisades,, the LA MASTER CHORALE singing Haydn's 'The Creation' and TIMUR AND THE DIME MUSEUM taking their stand for contemporary opera. Want opera? Try VINEYARD TOURING OPERA's 'Cavalleria' continues in Claremont, and CENTER STAGE OPERA returns with their monthly Italian yumfest, 'Amici della musica'. (More on all of these on the Calendar linked at the bottom of this column.)
But the students of the Bob Cole Conservatory at CSU Long Beach will also perform Jules Massenet's own Cinderella tale with 'Cendrillon', directed by STEPHANIE VLAHOS and conducted by JOHANNES MÜLLER-STOSCH. This family-friendly show will get three performances--Friday, Saturday and Sunday--and ordering tickets online is strongly recommended. Get info and tickets by clicking: http://web-app.usc.edu/ws/eo2/calendar/32/event/892878
Or, get a Puccini double bill with two of the works from 'Il Trittico': the richly evocative 'Suor Angelica' and the delightly 'Gianni Schicchi'. Tickets are only $25, and the performance is charming and accessible South Pasadena. For more information and to order tickets online, click: http://www.celestialoperacompany.org
USC's COLLEGIUM MUSICUM offers a Saturday performance of 'The Play of Robin and Marion', thought to be the earliest example of French secular play with music. Directed by ADAM KNIGHT GILBERT, RACHELLE FOX and ROTEM GILBERT, this rarely-seen treasure will challenge Thornton students and give the audience a free ride into a long-gone era. (Yes, tickets are free, but be prepared to pay for parking if you're not a USC regular.) For information, click: http://web-app.usc.edu/ws/eo2/calendar/32/event/892878
Other concerts offered this week include LONG BEACH CAMERATA SINGERS in their concert as part of the Long Beach Bach Festival, entitled 'A Man of Sorrows: Bach to Blues'. The chorus is joined by DIRTY SUGAR BAND and soloist DENEAN DYSON for J.S.B. masterworks, modern choral pieces and, VICTORIA's 'Missa pro defunctis a 6' and a selection of blues and soul. The program will be in Manhattan Beach on Saturday and Long Beach on Sunday. For information, maps and tickets, click: http://www.longbeachcameratasingers.org
Also in Long Beach, the FRIENDS OF CHORAL MUSIC presents 'Sol Mates' at the beautiful sculpture garden at the Museum of Latin American Art, pairing music, art and food from South of the Border. Tickets are $30, and street tacos and sangria will be available for purchase. (If you're not on the Next 7 mailing list, see below to subscribe: we have a special offer available for this event.) COMING UP: Next weekend may include Palm Sunday, but there's plenty of cultural activity goin' on: How about 'A Serenade to Spring' from MALIBU FRIENDS OF MUSIC? Or perhaps you'll enjoy a dip into the love stories of myth with MUSICA ANGELICA's 'Cantates Françaises'. A luscious Verdi Requiem takes place in Claremont with joint forces from Pomona College, CSU Long Beach, and guests soloists LUCY SHELTON (soprano and Pomona alum), mezzo LESLIE INMAN, tenor SAL MALAKI and bass SCOTT GRAFF. It doesn't get better, and we'll have more details next week.
As always, good luck deciding your musical fate this weekend, and thank you for supporting live singing!
