Jouyssance performs favorites

in honor of past president

John Leicester was a longtime president of the early music ensemble's board, and passed away in January.  (Leicester is second from the right in the back row in the picture above.)  With a program of 'Souvenirs',  the early music ensemble performs "his favorites and ours", with an encore presentation of the Missa et ecce terrae motus by Antoine Brumel, along with works by  Isaac, Josquin, Parsons, Sheppard and Johnson.  Dr. Nicole Baker, their artistic director, will conduct.

  LAURI D. GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights

As usual, there is a delightful variety of events on the calendar, including PACIFIC COAST OPERA's 'La Traviata', a whimsical look at a dark genre from REPERTORY OPERA COMPANY, a local performance by the beloved PERFECT GENTLEMEN in El Segundo, and the lovely vocal sound of ELEMENTAL HARMONY at the Brand Library. You can get details about any of these on the website, but I'd like to focus on just a few little treasures here:

The NATIONAL CHILDREN'S CHORUS, led by Luke McEndarfer, brings geek chic to choral music with a program entitled 'Shuffle' at the Edye, the smaller of the two Broad spaces in Santa Monica.  This creative conceptual program aims to emulate what would happen if your iPodŽ could play live music, and uses the idea to bring together a program of widely different genres.  Although it sounds a little gimmicky, don't let that keep you away: this group is becoming known for solid performances with spirit and ingenuity, and it just sounds like fun.  (Make sure your smartphone is loaded with a Lighter app, so you can show the love!)  There are three performances on Saturday.  For info and tickets, click:

One of the newer little opera companies in SoCal, VINEYARD TOURING OPERA COMPANY, performs Mascagni's dramatic and beloved 'Cavalleria Rusticana' in Santa Monica this weekend, and Claremont the next.  Fully staged, with orchestra and supertitle translation, the passionate story has become a classic, and this troupe is already showing promise:  get your tickets now, so you can say 'I knew them when...'  For complete information, click:

With a program called 'Souvenirs', JOUYSSANCE EARLY MUSIC ENSEMBLE honors their former president, JOHN LEICESTER, who passed away in January.  Leicester worked tirelessly to support and develop the group, and sang both with the ensemble and elsewhere in town.  The concert takes place Sunday afternoon at St. Cross church in Hermosa Beach, a favorite venue for the ensemble, and includes works that were dear to his heart and theirs, including the complex and beautiful 'Missa et ecce terrae motus' by Antoine Brumel, plus works by Isaac, Josquin, Parsons, Sheppard and Johnson.  For more information and tickets, click:

Don't let your cultural outings be bound the weekend: If you love new music (or are wondering what it's all about), you won't want to miss 'Music in Spirals', a performance by Pepperdine's COLLEGIUM MUSICUM NOVUM and Percussion Ensemble.  Some of the best singers in town will perform masterworks by Arvo Pärt, Steve Reich and Terry Riley, all in the exquisite atmosphere of Stauffer Chapel.  Whether you just want to hear 'in C' one more time, or are curious because you have no idea what that might be, you won't regret it.  For information and tickets. click:

COMING UP:  Next week, CELESTIAL OPERA brings Puccini to Pasadena, FRIENDS OF MUSIC presents 'Sol Mates' at MOLAA in Long Beach, and Haydn's 'The Creation' comes to Disney Hall.  A truly luscious spring continues...

As always, thank you for supporting live singing!

See you soon,
