Parisian Delights

Paris in (almost) Springtime

The swallows won't be back for another couple of weeks.  Spring doesn't officially start until two days after that.  But there are at least three reasons to go to San Juan Capistrano this Saturday: a great group, great music, and a truly great space.  De Angelis Ensemble is a small choral group focused on early music, done well.  Under the artistic direction of Matthew Gray, the ensemble is young -- this is only their sixth season -- but has developed a strong reputation and an impressive repertoire.  They group their selections, often rare works of indelible beauty, into strong, carefully themed programs which are performed by an equally strong collection of singers from across Southern California.  The performers travel significant distances to work together on music they love, and the performances take place in the Mission's magnificent basilica built in the 1980s, replicating parts of the Great Stone Church destroyed by earthquake in 1812.

Still need another reason?  Take the day.  Take the train if you wish: here's the schedule. Go down early and have some dinner. This is a concert that deserves to be an excursion.

  LAURI D. GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights

Tonight, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra offers a program of Schumann, Schumann and more Schumann at the Broad, featuring soprano Elissa Johnston.  The program, led by UCLA faculty member and author Dr. Peter Whybrow, takes a scientific view of the composer's state of mind, as evidenced by his music.  For information and tickets, click here

Also Thursday, the military gets musical in the first concert during the local tour of the U.S. Army Chorus.  The acclaimed, historic ensemble joins the young men of the Los Angeles Children's Chorus at Pasadena Pres for a varied program of classics, patrotic favorites, new choral works and pop arrangements.  The concert is free -- call 626-793-4231 for details, or click here

Friday brings Parsons Dance joins the genre-bending East Village Opera Company at the gorgeous new Valley Performing Arts Center at Cal State Northridge.  EVOC is one of a very few ensembles who has proven their success on professional classical stages as well as in the recording studio.  Blending powerful, well-trained voices with strings, a rock band and multimedia, 'Remember Me' is a very modern story on one of the oldest themes:  tragic love.  For information and tickets, click here

With the Philip Glass Festival well underway at Long Beach Opera, their next 'Coincidences' presentation on Saturday is the perfect prep for the upcoming production of 'Akhnaten'.  Glass is one of only a handful of contemporary composers who have created works engaging and enduring enough to achieve masterwork status, and this opera is certainly one of those rare examples.  LBO's highly-anticipated production is celebrated alongside man other events related to Glass' moving and often enigmatic work.  For a complete schedule and more details on the festival, click here

The Opera Buffs have established a long and well-regarded tradition of support for LA's opera stars of the future.  Providing performance opportunities, funding and a variety of other opportunities, this philanthropic org fills a crucial gap for emerging artists in the area, and offers fans of the art form opportunities to hear up-and-coming talent.  This year's Spring Showcase takes place Sunday at the Colburn School, with a program of opera scenes entitled 'One Day When We Were Young'.  Get more information about the afternoon event by clicking here

Wednesday the 9th, the always-fascinating Yuval Ron Ensemble is joined by star cantor Danny Maseng at Temple Israel of Hollywood for a mélange of interfaith pieces.  This event is part of TIOH's 'Oasis: The Spiritual Salon' series, and is organized by Yuval Ron, the Oscar-winning composer, innovative presenter and oud master who travels with world with his ensemble, building bridges across boundaries of faith, culture and ideaology.  Tickets are free for TIOH members, only $10 for guests.  For information, click here

COMING UP:  LA Opera keeps things interesting with the continuing run of the well-reviewed 'Turk in Italy', the launch of Britten's 'Turn of the Screw' and a recital by tenor superstar Jonas Kaufmann on the 11th.  Soprano Lori Stinson, tenor Robert MacNeil and pianist Mark Robson revisit the life of LA legend Elinor Remick Warren on the 12th, and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa comes to Northridge that evening. Also, baritone Vladimir Chernov joins Pacific Serenades on the 12th and 13th.  More about these and many other events is available on the Lister Calendar linked below, and we'll share more next week.  Thank you for supporting live singing!
