LAURI D. GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights
Great beginnings, and a whole lot of variety this week. Let's start with two student productions that show promise and ingenuity:
Thursday marks the first of two performances of MARK ADAMO's 'Little Women' at Pepperdine. (The second is Saturday the 26th.) This popular modern opera has not yet been seen in this neck of the woods, and their able and talented students are sure to do well with this charming piece. For information and tickets, click here.
Friday night, the opera students at Cal State Northridge will perform two chamber operas from the lesser-known realm of the repertoire: NED ROREM's 'Fables' and PAUL HINDEMITH's 'There and Back Again' will delight their audience and challenge their performers, but are not likely to come this way again very soon. The show repeats in two more performances on Saturday and a fourth on Sunday. For information and tickets, click here.
While we're at it, there's still time to catch UCLA's 'Dialogues of the Carmelites', continuing through Saturday. for info, click here.
Saturday will be a tough choice, with plenty of options: as of press time, we have no fewer than twelve events listed on the calendar, and more coming in. The HARLEM GOSPEL CHOIR is in town, MARTIN CHALIFOUR joins the LOS ANGELES CHILDREN'S CHORUS for a benefit (two performances), HYPERIUMUSIC brings 'Cuban Nights' to the South Bay, and the 3rd Annual Redondo Beach Baroque Festival continues with 'Handel, La Guerre, and J.S. Bach. (See also an intriguing Baroque vocal recital on Friday.) CENTER STAGE OPERA also starts a two-performance run of the operatic favorite 'Die Fledermaus', which continues Sunday. Check the calendar to get the big picture and for details on these events and more.
Sunday the 27th brings the start of LONG BEACH OPERA's Philip Glass Festival, with a screening of the evocative and unforgettable film 'KOYAANISQATSI: LIFE OUT OF BALANCE'. More events follow, leading up to the March production of Glass' operatic masterwork 'Akhnaten'. See as much of this landmark festival as you can. For information about the company, the festival and tickets, click here.
Next Wednesday, local tenor celeb JONATHAN MACK and fabulous pianista LISA SYLVESTER perform a mixed recital at USC, and admission is free. For information, click here.
COMING UP: Vocal music comes from unexpected places as LOS ANGELES CHAMBER ORCHESTRA and PARSONS DANCE make room for classical voices. The AURIA TRIO makes their winning appearance as winnings of the Beverly Hills Auditions, and the LOS ANGELES MASTER CHORALE makes its way to Korea. Many more events are coming in all the time. Please take a look at the calendar linked below, plan ahead, and...
...thank you for supporting live singing!
See you soon,
