LAURI D. GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights
I'll admit it: I was dead wrong about President's Day weekend. Last week I made snide about store sales and a light calendar, but we're full up. You'll have to go to the Calendar for details, but here's a quick look, starting with... ...OPERA! There's plenty of it this week, starting with L.A. OPERA's new production of 'The Turk in Italy', and moving through a range of favorites and obscure gems. UCLA OPERA is performing a run of Poulenc's 'Dialogues of the Carmelites', running through next weekend. The LA MET performs Mozart's 'Magic Flute', and MUSICA ANGELICA takes another path with the same composer's rarely-heard 'Zaide'. REPERTORY OPERA finishes up their run of 'Roméo et Juliette', and there are equally enticing operatic offerings starting around the 25th. There is no dearth of concerts and recitals, either: Visit 'The Romantics' at Scripps College in Claremont; 'Musical Mosaic' in Palos Verdes; and 'Songs of Spain and Latin America' in Claremont. These are just a few, so check out the calendar for more intriguing programs. COMING UP: Next week brings lesser-known operas from NED ROREM and PAUL HINDEMITH to CSUN, and mezzo STEPHANIE ASTON to CalArts. CENTER STAGE OPERA visits the other (flying) mouse with 'Die Fledermaus', and MARTIN CHALIFOUR joins the LOS ANGELES CHILDREN'S CHORUS for an 'Intimate Recital'. We'll have more details on these events and more in the next issue. There are many more concerts on the website: please use the link below to see the big picture, get details and plan your musical week. As always, thank you for supporting live singing!
