The program is entitled, 'Devotion, Regret and Hearts Forlorn' -- who could resist?  This new early music ensemble boasts four fabulous male voices and is already developing a name for themselves in Southern California.  Defining themselves as "devoted to what is beautiful, veritable, and powerful in music", this particular program draws from the French court of the 15th and 16th centuries.  Performers include ensemble director N. Lincoln Hanks (tenor), Kory Reid (countertenor), Joel Nesvadba (baritone) and Jinyoung Jang (bass), singing in Pepperdine's stain-dappled and acoustically glorious Stauffer Chapel.  Tickets are only $12, and as this group seems destined for great things, we should all take advantage of this bargain while we can.

  LAURI D. GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights

Decisions, decisions...this week is going to be tough, as there are several overlapping events that will be difficult to choose from:

Thursday night, world-renowned baritone DMITRI HVOROSTOVSKY performs a recital at Dorothy Chandler.  But BLACKBIRD MUSIC PROJECT offers an equally tempting program, as mezzo DELORES ZIEGLER and pianist RITA SLOAN tell the story of Robert and Clara Schumann and their friendship with Johannes Brahms in 'For Love of Clara'.  The concert is at Cal State Long Beach -- For information and tickets, call (562) 985-5408 or click here

Friday brings opera scenes at USC, mezzo JOYCE DIDONATO to the Broad in Santa Monica.  However, a little trip to Malibu will get you a chance to hear ALCHYMEY at Pepperdine, a new early music quartet already generating very good buzz. The ensemble is made of countertenor KORY REID, tenor/director N LINCOLN HANKS, baritone JOEL NESVADBA and bass JINYOUNG JANG.  With a program called 'Devotion, Regret and Hearts Forlorn', they'll perform French vocal music from the 15th and 16th centuries.  From what I hear, these guys are going places: you won't want to miss it.  For information, click here

Saturday night brings the inimitable BACH COLLEGIUM SAN DIEGO to Los Angeles, where their growing LA following will enjoy a pairing of J.S. Bach's 'Magnificat' (BWV 243a) and Vivaldi's beloved 'Gloria'.  Under the sage direction of RUBEN VALENZUELA, this relatively young group is gaining respect for sensitive and passionate performances.  For more information and to order tickets online, click here

Also Saturday night is the next concert from SYNCHROMY at Occidental College in Eagle Rock.  This cooperative group of composers and performers is devoted to promoting and preserving new music in its most vital sense:  these are works by local composers, performed by people who believe in innovation and in music beyond academia. With works by ERIC GUINIVAN, JENNI BRANDON, DANIEL GALL, JASON BARABBA, YALIL GUERRA and VERA IVANOVA, this concert could change your mind about modern music.  Tickets are $15, and can be purchased by clicking here

With Valentine's Day looming (you haven't forgotten, right?), Sunday is the perfect day to take your sweetie out for some great sounds:  Try the annual lovefest at the Nixon Library with baritone HERSHEL GREEN and pianist ANN PATRICK GREEN, a visit with the PASADENA MASTER CHORALE singing 'Songs of Love' in Pasadena, or dinner and some opera with CENTER STAGE OPERA as they perform their monthly Italian feast called 'Amici Della Musica'.  Details on all of these events and more are available on the calendar linked below.

COMING UP:  Next week is a little more quiet, as President's Day weekend seems (alas) more focused on department store sales, but there are juicy offerings from REPERTORY OPERA (continuing 'Roméo et Juliette' in the last performance of the run), 'Musical Mosaic' in Palos Verdes, and POULENC's 'Dialogues of the Carmelites' at UCLA.  We'll also enjoy a rarely-performed Mozart opera from MUSICA ANGELICA and several intriguing recitals.  Life is good, so stay tuned...

There are many more concerts on the website:  please use the link below to see the big picture, get details and plan your musical week.  As always, thank you for supporting live singing!

See you soon,
