The Affluent Artist

by Rick DiBiasio, CFP

Throw out the stereotypes about art and money and allow financial abundance into their lives. This book offers business and financial planning wisdom to creative individuals who find themselves in the roles of the Starving Artist, the Corporate Artist, the Self Employed Artist and the Affluent Artist. It includes stories and interviews with artists in each of these roles as well as "Financial Stuff You Just Gotta Know," a humorous and necessary primer on financial terms and situations, as well as a how-to on avoiding financial pitfalls.

Year of the Skill

6 areas of improvement for long-term success in the arts

Step Two:  Financial Planning

Whoa, that's a big topic...  Since money drives so much in our lives, its monitoring and management can seem overwhelming and even frightening.  But with an understanding of the basics, steady work and ongoing planning (and adjusting), there is no reason that you can't survive and thrive in your artistic life.

But never fear:  the 'Read more' link below does not lead to an epic of 60,000 words that pretends to have all the answers.  This article is purely motivational, designed to help you choose a specific topic, find a starting point, and set some goals for this year, so you can create your own personalized kick in the butt.

Ready to face the financial music?  Take a deep breath, and charge ahead (in the non-plastic sense, of course):

  1. Take a look at the main areas of financial focus, outlined below.
  2. Assess the current state of affairs for you, right now. Consider doing this assessment on paper: write out your answers longhand, taking the time to really consider and get specific.  (i.e. "OK, I guess" is not a useful assessment.)
  3. Pick one that needs the most attention in your life.
  4. Choose a resource or a first step.
  5. Take positive action:  This may mean buying the book, signing up for a class, or hiring some help. Just do something, and right away, so you can prove your commitment to yourself and your success.
  6. Map out your plan for further action with clear, quantifiable and dated goals  It doesn't have to be perfect -- it just needs to be clear.
  7. Adjust as needed as curve balls fly, but keep going.
  8. Rinse and repeat as needed:  Once that area is under control, move on to the next. You're building habits, not doing one-time tasks. Just keep it up, and your progress may make your head spin...
Each section outlined below offers a few questions for self-assessment and general pondering.  We've included links to a variety of online resources, and have also updated our Amazon store with books that can teach you a thing or two.

Areas of focus
  • Budgeting and Cash Flow
  • Recordkeeping
  • Taxes
  • Debt Management
  • Credit management
  • Retirement Planning
  • Your relationship to money

Our new weekly newsletter, open to all

You've probably already seen it:  In order to serve our readers most effectively, vocal events will now be featured in a weekly newsletter, 'Next 7' -- the first issue went out about two weeks ago.  View it here.

We may occasionally feature events in The Links, but this change will allow us to draw your attention to vocal events weekly, and in a more attractive, easy-to-use package.  Please encourage your friends and relatives to subscribe as well, so they can help support the vocal community.  Of course, you can view the Calendar anytime: we're updating it constantly.

For your convenience, we've added our existing Links subscribers to the Next 7 mailing list.  You should get this weekly newsletter on Thursday mornings, so you can plan your weekend and the ensuing week. As always, you can unsubscribe, change your email address or otherwise manage your subscriptions at any time, using the links at the bottom of any of our newsletters.

Thank you for your ongoing support of our singers and our community.  Hope to see you at a concert or other performance soon!
