Writers wanted
writing
Musicians with strong writing skills and a solid understanding of classical vocal repertoire are sought for reviews of local vocal events and opera productions.  Reviewers will be compensated with tickets and bylines, and will retain full rights to their work.  A copy of the review will be placed in the Raves forum and in the public blog at LaurisList.com, but reviewers may also publish the review on their own sites/blogs or on other sites, as appropriate.

This new program is designed to support local vocal performances -- these are to be honest, knowledgeable reviews by avid arts advocates.  Candidates will be selected based on writing skills and an objective standing in the community.  (They must not be hampered by obvious conflicts of interest.)

To apply, submit name, contact information and  a relevant writing sample (approx 250-500 words, may be a fictional review or other) by email, using this web form.

To view an excellent example of what we're looking for, as seen in the excellent Rave of ROC's 'Magic Flute' from Elyse Cook, click here.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Orange slices

Staying healthy, are we?

Nothing like a couple of days in bed to remind one of all preventions not used.  A few hints and caveats, as cold and flu season is hitting hard and hitting early this year:

FERN !!!

It states the obvious like it's an herbal remedy.  Make sure you're getting enough

  • Fluids  (Give your water bottle a reason to live!)
  • Exercise  (How about a walk?)
  • Rest (After all that exercise, you'll need it.)
  • Nutrition (The good kind.  Not in pill form.)

Stock up

Buy supplies now, before you need them.  (For that matter, put this note in your calendar for July or August next year!)

  • Basic cold medicines:  If you have one or two you tend to need regularly, make sure they're at hand.  Ask your doctor if you should keep antibiotics in the house for immediate dosing.
  • Cough drops:  Put them in a Zip-Loc and keep them somewhere cool and dry.
  • Tissues: What, you think they're gonna go bad?)
  • Hand sanitizer.  Because it's you, it's me, it's up to all of us.
  • Humidifier: Because stores will run out.
  • Vitamins & herbal supplements:  Everyone has their own theories about supplements.  But whether you use them daily or just when you're fighting something, make sure you're ready to go to battle.
  • Zinc lozenges:  Don't buy too many, as they tend to absorb moisture and go bad.  But make sure you have some on hand, so you can use them the moment you feel something coming on.
  • Tea:  Throat Coat from Traditional Medicinals seems to be a singer favorite.  Yogi Tea makes a good throat soother, too.  I like mint tea, green tea or tangerine, with just a touch of spiced honey.
  • Chicken soup: Canned or a mix -- make it easy for when you need it most.  If you're up to it or you have a live-in chef, here's a killer recipe for pimped-out ramen, full of 6-minute goodness.

Hang in there, be prepared, and stay well!

Under constructionIn the works

My own battle with a bad bug has resulted in the delay of some big changes that had been announced and slated for this week.  The new format and pricing structure for add-on lists and the new DayLinks update (for days without a full issue of the Links) should start on Monday.  Thanks for your patience!
