8 summer "projects" for a better new season Make your downtime count!
Lots of notes coming in this week, expressing everything from thankful bliss to panicked frustration. When we artists don't have enough to do, it tends to play on our minds, and August is almost always a tough month in this regard. If you're feeling more fretful than restful, pick a plan of action. Now's the time! - Singer, promote thyself. Pick at least one project scheduled in the upcoming season that you'll use to build some buzz, whether it's about you or the organization you're working with. Plan some PR and set a schedule. (Then, follow through!)
Catch up with the artist buddies you don't regularly see. (read: Networking) Pick three people you haven't seen in a year or more, and get together for a phone call, a cup of coffee or a museum visit. Pick an activity that allows for talk and relaxation. Ask about their projects, family, life in general.- Revamp your print materials. Are your business cards, resume, headshot and bio in good shape? Take the time to think carefully about presentation. Make sure they reflect you. If not, make plans to revamp, and get help if you need it.
Update your website, or GET ONE. Even one page gets the basic info across. But it needs to look good, and the information had better be correct, and up-to-date. Make sure the year is present on all concert dates, whether they're past, present or future. Check the site in multiple browsers to make sure it works well. Opt for a clean, cohesive look that puts the focus on you, not fancy details. (More on websites later this month!)- Plan your next personal project. When was the last time you did a recital or a performance that really fed your unique, artistic self? Brainstorm about repertoire, venue, dates, etc. Plan a year or more in advance, but make your plan specific. Get your first few steps out of the way this summer, then identify and schedule the next steps so you can work on it all year long.
Fill the gap with inspirational, non-musical activities. Go to an arts festival. Watch chalk dry. Check out a museum. Or, just play with your dog in the park. Find an interest away from work (remember "hobbies"?) and feed it. You never know what will come from it.
- Play hard. Find a new sport, dig up your garden or climb a new mountain. Get back in touch with the physical you (without overdoing it, of course!).
- Do nothing. OK, it doesn't sound like much of a project. But the heat of summer is a great time to take up meditation, yoga or even power-napping. Rest, relax and restore.
He who seeks rest finds boredom. He who seeks work finds rest.
--Dylan Thomas
