Michael in action
FeaturedProBuilder
The acting coach who believes in singers

Michael Ernst Goldstrom is a man of multiple passions, yet he brings them together seamlessly with breathtaking intensity.  With a stellar resume that includes degrees from Julliard, Columbia University and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, as well as further training at the Royal Academy, he has studied multiple theories of movement, including Alexander, Dalcroze and Laban.  A veteran performer on and off Broadway, in film and television and in appearances with both the LA and New York philharmonics, he is a talented director and writer with strong experience in comedy and improvisation.  Yet somehow, Michael is also a classical pianist, speaks English, Italian, French, German and some Russian, and is deeply committed to working in opera, which he refers to as 'the ultimate live art form'.

Michael has been a Lauri's List member for about a year, joining specifically so that he could connect with local singers and devise the best ways to help them grow.  For the last three years, Michael has been coaching singers in LA Opera's Domingo-Thornton Young Artists Program.  He also works with individuals in private coaching sessions, where he puts his remarkable understanding of operatic repertoire to work.  In my own recent session with him, I was most struck not only by his seemingly inexhaustible energy and his encyclopedic knowledge of the material (we were working on a modern art song treatment of Shakespeare's Sonnet 30), I was continually surprised by his obvious respect for classical singers--their training, their stamina, their multi-faceted accomplishment, and their glorious potential.

Michael attributes this unshakable faith to his mother, a schoolteacher who makes a point of treating everyone she meets 'as if they have the potential to be the best,' he says with obvious pride. 'So, no matter who they are, whether they're still in school or have already had 20 years on stage, I see the best in them, and they're treated the same.'  This attitude shows through quite clearly, and has a tremendous effect on the singers he works with.  'I know what [singers] are capable of, and I know how they are preventing themselves from going there.  My goal is to help them reach that extraordinary potential that they all have.'

A precious few will get to work with Michael this summer in a seminar intensive, if they act quickly:  next week, on June 30, Michael launches his 'Shakespeare for Singers' workshop, and there are just a couple of spots left.  The workshop will involve a serious commitment to preparation, as after the first class, homework will be mandatory.  But the very small class size ensures a lot of individual attention and focused work, and it will transform your approach to character development and storytelling.  In the end, you'll have a fully prepared monologue and a clear idea of how to prepare more.  The experience is sure to be worth every penny--take advantage of this special opportunity if you can.  Otherwise, get in touch with Michael and schedule a private session.  The skills you acquire will apply to your projects in a multitude of ways.
