by James McCourt

This comic novel is a good example of how a title can kill book sales, but it's worth reading, nonetheless.  (The name and title are pronounced 'Mardu Gorgeous'.)  McCourt's now-classic underground hit has been around for a while, but is no less potent today:  recently highlighted in Anne Midgette's Washington Post column, the story is told through the eyes of a young opera diva.  Full of potential and bright promise, she finds that navigating the backstage world isn't a smooth road. (Sound familiar?)  Here's a peek at the promo:

Outrageous and uproarious, flamboyant and serious as only the most perfect frivolity can be, James McCourt's entrancing send-up of the world of opera has been a cult classic for more than a quarter-century. This comic tribute to the love of art is a triumph of art and love by a contemporary American master.

Worth a look, or even a book club... check it out here.
