**FRAUD ALERT** Local Businesses Report Receiving Bogus Maintenance Warranty Invoices
CENTRAL ILLINOIS- Local businesses have informed our BBB that an F-rated company, US Telecom (aka UST Development, Inc.) based in Ontario, CA is soliciting in our region. US Telecom has a history of sending fraudulent invoices to businesses for 'maintenance warranties' in the amount of $175.00 to $425.00. See below for an example of the solicitation. These invoices are solicitations for business, not an actual bill. You are not obligated to pay this amount to US Telecom/UST Development, Inc. The BBB Review for the company reflects 244 processed in the last 12 months. Complainants allege the company sends out fraudulent invoices for services never rendered asking for payment of $175.00. The company responds to some complaints by advising complainants the invoice they received was NOT for services rendered but instead for preventative maintenance for the year to come. According to the company, an invoice is sent out once a year for a full service maintenance agreement to all the companies in their database. This invoice is optional; it is not a mandatory service. The company contends that the invoice has disclosures that it is not a bill. In September of 2011, the BBB challenged the company's mailed solicitations designed to look like an invoice. The solicitation does not include a disclosure statement, which informs the recipient that the mailer is in face a solicitation, and not an invoice for payment. BBB also advised the company to modify the layout of the advertisement to minimize the possibility of misunderstanding by the recipient. The company did not respond to the BBB's request. If you business has received one of these solicitations, please contact the BBB at 309-670-1182 or email Jessica at jtharp_bbb@heart.net and the Illinois Attorney General's Consumer Fraud Division at 1-800-243-0618.

Channel Partners Conference and Expo, Las Vegas, Nevada, March 26, 2012 - Estech Systems, Inc. (ESI) (http://www.esi-estech.com), an innovative designer and manufacturer of high-performance telephone systems for small to medium businesses (SMBs) and organizations will be demonstrating the new Android™-based ESI 250 Smartphone that will be available to existing and new reseller partners for the Beta release beginning in May. The ESI 250 Smartphone is the only enterprise-grade smartphone developed and designed exclusively for SMBs. ESI is demonstrating the Smartphone for the Desktop™ and many of the new business productivity enhancing applications at ESI booth #614 at the Channel Partners Conference and Expo, which is taking place March 26-29 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
The ESI 250 Smartphone uses the Android operating system to deliver powerful business productivity applications offered through the ESI application Marketplace. The business productivity applications make traditional telephone features such as conference calling simple for anyone to use. Applications for specific vertical markets that improve efficiency or information tracking will also be available in future applications. The ESI Marketplace will be a continually growing resource where customers can find custom applications as well as select third-party developed applications including Evernote, SwiftKey and many others.
The ESI 250 Smartphone comes with an 800x395 resolution 7-inch resistive color touch-screen that enables easy navigation based on traditional swipes, scrolls and presses. The integration of the Android enabled device with the ESI telephony platforms and powerful applications will offer the following benefits:
- Quick one-touch access to internal extensions or speed dial entries through 144 programmable "soft" keys.
- Easy access to Android-specific navigational keys: Menu, Home, and Back and custom buttons for contacts and custom Esi-Keys as well as a traditional dial pad as a part of the telephone device. These fixed buttons allow for the touch screen real estate to be used for business productivity applications.
- Contact synchronization with mobile devices and other personal contacts allows for quick access to all contacts easily from any device. No longer do you have to search through email contact lists separately just to make a phone call.
- Enhanced presence management allows the user to understand the status of the other employees with just a glance of the Esi-Keys by utilizing the RFID access control that is available on all ESI systems.
- Making conference calls is no longer intimidating or cumbersome as the enhanced conference calling simplifies the process of adding and removing attendees from conference calls. The enhanced calling also enables the user to mute certain parties and provide for split and private conversations among the conference call participants thus allowing for greater flexibility on the calls.
- Advanced real time call handling allows users to pick and choose how incoming calls are handled putting the power at their finger tips.
The ESI 250 Smartphone is expected to be generally available this early Q3 2012.

Application security: It's something that no network can live without, especially in the age of Web 2.0. But what is application security exactly and what is its role in the enterprise? While most users have a very concrete understanding of most standard security measures, such as antivirus, firewalls and intrusion prevention, the definition of application security seems to be a bit more nebulous, if not more misunderstood, with the emergence of Web 2.0 and the explosion of social, interactive and streaming media. So here's a bit of a tutorial. Read more...Threat Report March 21 - April 4 Click here to learn about Unified Threat Management solutions from CCC Technologies, Inc.

Everybody Lies: Backup and Ingest Rates
Mark Campbell, Unitrends | Modern Backup 2 Blog
This is the second article in the series "Everybody Lies: Backup" The introductory article may be found here. The other day I had a potential customer ask me about backup ingest rates (i.e., how fast could a backup potentially be for one of our appliances.) I told her that the fastest the backup could be would be limited by the network that connected our backup appliance to the system being backed up. I ran through some numbers with her - and then was surprised when she told me that another backup vendor could backup much faster than that. She sent me a link to the information. The backup rate that the vendor was quoted was huge - far higher than the physical network was capable of supporting! I started digging through the information - and found that the way that the ingest rate was being calculated was based on what the THEORETICAL performance of doing a master backup every day, and then included in their THEORETICAL ingest rate the improvement of doing incremental forever backups. They then assumed the change rate was relatively low. Thus they were able to claim amazing backup ingest rates far surpassing anything I had ever seen.

Lessons Learned: Outsourcing Managed Network Services
Doug Carolus, Jonathan Shaw, Evan Schladow, Pace Harmon CIO.com
Driven by financial needs, a competitive managed services market, enhanced remote network management tools and demanding business requirements, organizations are increasingly delegating control of their network -- including carrier services and service management -- to third-party providers.
The potential benefits of implementing fully outsourced managed services include reduced cost of ownership (COO), access to external expertise/intellectual property, improved operational performance and abstracted management. A holistic outsourced model can also allow organizations to better allocate internal resources on strategic projects and core business activities.
