"Mitel's New Creative License"
Ryan Kuchenbecker, Convergence Engineer
Ryan Kuchenbecker
Mitel Communications Director (MCD) has proven itself to be a stable and feature rich communications platform. The recent release of MCD 5.0 includes many new applications and several enhancements to existing features. Some of the most significant improvements are those to the licensing structure.

Mitel Communications Director now supports a Shared Enterprise System license model. A Shared Enterprise System is a networked controller that belongs to an application group. All controllers in an application group are assigned a common application group identifier during the licensing process and have the ability to share licensed feature allotments with other controllers in the group. In a shared enterprise environment, one controller functions as the Designated License Manager (DLM). The DLM holds the license keys for all the other controllers in the application group and allows for the dynamic distribution of license resources to all members, enabling licenses to be removed from one controller in the group and reassigned to another without needing to re-administer individual license keys.

Another new feature is Try Before You Buy. When accessing the License and Option Selection screen in MCD 5.0 one will notice that certain features have a shopping cart icon beside them. These features have been assigned the Try Before You Buy capability and can be enabled before they have actually been purchased.

ESI Tech Tip:
Using Help Mode (Verbal User Guide)

ESI_LogoYour ESI phone system's Help mode (also called the Verbal User Guide) - a carefully conceived combination of spoken information, display readouts, and even key illumination when appropriate - is a powerful tool to help you learn how to use the system's many features.

NOTES:
  • As explained elsewhere, your ESI phone has a combo PROG/HELP key unless it is a 48-Key Feature Phone (which has separate PROGRAM and HELP keys). Under the circumstances described in this section, the PROG/HELP key will invoke Help mode.
  • The ESI Cordless Handsets have no access to the Verbal User Guide (and, therefore, no key to invoke it).
Tutorial

When your station is idle, press PROG/HELP, and then follow the spoken Help menu to:

  • Learn how to use the phone
  • Hear a description of how any key is used
  • Learn how to use voice mail features
  • Hear a complete tutorial on phone operation
Help during station programming

To hear a detailed description of a function you wish to program, press PROG/HELP while programming it.

Help during a call

Press PROG/HELP while on a call and this will place the call on hold, whereupon you can use Help mode to hear a description of the function you wish to perform. When you exit Help mode, you will be reconnected to the call.

While you are either in Help mode or programming your phone, your station will be temporarily placed in DND ("do-not-disturb"; see "MUTE/DND"). Anyone calling your station while you are in DND will be forwarded to your mailbox (or other destination set by the Installer).

Exiting Help mode

To exit Help mode, simply hang up.

The Seven Deadly Sins of Backup and Recovery: Replication as Off-site Storage

Mark Campbell, Unitrends | Modern Backup 2 Blog

Backup & Recovery

The idea of replicated disk storage originated in the fail-safe systems of 20 years ago.  In this technology, two disks or disk arrays simultaneously stored exactly the same data, such that if one had a failure, no data was lost.

Along the way, it occurred to disaster recovery professionals that replicated disk systems could be used for off-site storage by inserting a WAN between the two disk arrays. Today, replication is typically used by SANs and "data mirror" products.  Replication uses block-level communications to constantly synchronize data between two different locations.

The advantages to this method are near real-time data protection and ease of configuration and maintenance.  Once established, a replication environment requires little ongoing attention.

The disadvantages are that the synchronization occurs at a very low level, below the ability to see data and file system errors or corruption.  This means that the inevitable errors (some of which are potentially fatal to a restoration) that occur naturally over time will be immediately replicated to the off-site location...and the hoped-for protection is thereby immediately lost.

Replication is also highly resource-intensive.  These systems create a substantial burden on the local CPU since most replication technologies utilize a type of RAID engine to capture the block-level changes.

This sort of replication is also extremely bandwidth-intensive.  As every data change for every transaction is moved across the network to the second location, this approach can impose a huge burden on a corporation's network infrastructure.

Stay tuned until next time when I discuss a better approach to off-site data storage - vaulting. Vaulting uses a less real-time technology but allows a level of file system integrity not found in a replication environment.

Do Managed Services Really Save Money?

By Pedro Pereira, Channel Insider

ConvergeSecure Managed IT Services

While cloud computing has yet to demonstrate it can save users money, the jury is in when it comes to managed services.

Cost savings always comes up as one of the main selling points of cloud computing. It is also one of the most compelling reasons for businesses to hire managed services providers (MSPs).

How much of a beneficial impact cloud services will actually have on IT budgets remains to be seen. The expectation of long-term savings is certainly reasonable, but depending on which iteration of the cloud a business adopts, an upfront investment may be necessary. That is certainly the case with private cloud implementations that require the deployment of a hardware stack. Of course, a lot of cloud services work on a pay-as-you-go model without upfront expenses.

When it comes to managed services, however, you could say the jury on cost savings is in. Close to 100 percent of end user organizations polled earlier this year indicated they have enjoyed substantial IT budget reductions as a direct result of working with MSPs.
