"Hot Line Service"
Juan Rodriguez, Vice President of Operations
Juan RodriguezThis month I wanted to discuss the benefits and abilities of enabling Hot Line Service on your Avaya Aura® Communication Manager system.

With Hot Line Service, the user of a single-line telephone can automatically connect to a pre-assigned destination when the user goes off-hook.

You can assign the following numbers as a Hot Line Service destination:
  • An attendant
  • An extension
  • A Feature Access Code (FAC)
  • A public telephone number
  • A private telephone number

ESI Tech Tip:
Recording Your Holiday Greeting

ESI_LogoRecording your ESI system's holiday greeting requires Installer or Administrator password access. The following is derived from the explanation of Function 61 in your ESI system's Installation Manual or Administrator's Manual (as the case may be).

  1. On any ESI phone within the system, press PROG/HELP.

Note: If using an ESI Feature Phone that has separate PROGRAM and HELP keys, press PROGRAM. The normal station programming menu prompt will begin to play.

  2. Stop the prompt by pressing HOLD (or, on an older ESI phone, PARK).
  3. Enter the Administrator password and then press #.

Note: If this doesn't admit you to Administrator-level programming (the phone display should show ADMINISTRATOR), contact your ESI Reseller for assistance.

  4. Access Function 61 by pressing 6 1.
  5. After the prompt, press 5 4 0 to select system prompt 540, which is the holiday greeting. If you have already recorded the holiday greeting, the system will play it for you. If you are satisfied with the currently recorded holiday greeting, skip to step 8.
  6. To record the holiday greeting (either for the first time or to replace an existing one), press 1. The system will then prompt you through the normal recording of the holiday greeting.
  7. When finished recording, press #. The system will then play back the newly recorded holiday greeting. If it is acceptable, press # to accept; if not, go back to step 6.
  8. Press # to accept the holiday greeting. This is the greeting that now will play when your system is put in holiday mode through the use of a programmed day/night key.

The Seven Deadly Sins of Backup and Recovery: Not Having Offsite Copies

Mark Campbell, Unitrends | Modern Backup 2 Blog

Backup & Recovery

Software security threats often grab headlines and the attention of IT execs. But what is often forgotten is physical security, which can also disrupt a company's operations and undermine its backup and recovery plans. Surprisingly, many companies do not have a formal process for regularly taking backup copies to a remote location.  Those that do may use an assistant's car trunk for tape storage and tape rotation... obviously not a suitably rigorous and reliable approach.

An increasingly large number of firms must store information off-site to comply with legislative requirements, like Sarbanes-Oxley and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, which have requirements for formal (and often off-site) retention of key data.

Organizations think of off-site storage as protection against true natural disasters, such as hurricanes or other events that can physically destroy a building.  While there's ample recent evidence of this risk, the benefits of off-site storage cover a multitude of less dramatic but equally damaging potential problems.

Making the Switch to Managed Services
Managed ServicesWhen the time comes to make the switch to managed services, it is important to know what you are looking for from a provider. As most business owners have or are beginning to realize, there are plenty of benefits that can be realized by bringing on a managed services provider to address IT and other needs.

In order to get the most from your managed services contract you must carefully compare all potential providers to ensure they are willing and able to provide the services you need to keep your business moving forward in the future. If your managed services provider cannot supply the following three things (at minimum) keep looking until you find a company that addresses these issues.
