What is Spyware? How Do I Get It Off My PC and Prevent It From Returning?
Dan Labriola, ConvergeSecure® Engineer

Dan Labriola

A note from Kim:

Hi everyone, I am reprinting last month's Ask the Expert to apologize to Dan Labriola. I failed to properly title and update the picture that he provided for his article submission last month. Sorry Dan! Here is the correct article in it's entirety.

Spyware is software that enables a user to obtain information about another's computer activities by transmitting data to their hard drive, without the user's knowledge. Spyware can collect information about your Internet surfing habits as well collect personal information. Spyware is known to change computer settings, interfere with Internet connections and speeds, and redirect web searches.

Why Employees Should Surf the Web At Work

By Bruce Gain, CIO.com

ConvergeSecure Managed IT ServicesA small business owner might frown on the idea that employees are surfing the Web on work time to read about the state of the NBA lockout. But, when done in moderation, giving employees the freedom to roam the Internet can actually help them work better.

Surfing the Web at work is not only harmless but it can even boost productivity, according to a team of researchers from the National University of Singapore. Web surfing offers workers "immediate gratification" and helps them "restore resources that are drained as a result of work," the researchers reported at last week's meeting of the Academy of Management in San Antonio, Texas.

Keith Shaw & Derek Manky, NetworkWorld

In this month's Network World Security Landscape host Keith Shaw chats with Fortinet's Derek Manky about the possibility of increased attacks now that SpyEye has been deeply discounted (from about $10,000 to about $100) after the source code was revealed. Retention, Deduplication, Maximum Protected Backups, and Incredibly Awesome New Backup Appliances

Mark Campbell, Unitrends | Modern Backup 2 Blog

Backup & Recovery

On September 1, 2011, Unitrends publicly released a new series of backup appliances. These things are incredible in terms of the value that they deliver - I'm really excited about what our engineering group has been able to create here.

Last month, we introduced a new line of desktop appliances that started at $1995. That in and of itself was pretty amazing - enterprise-level D2D (and D2D2D, D2D2T, D2D2C, etc.) backup appliances at that entry point. However, the rack-mount appliances we began offering on September 1st were even more incredible. We lowered the price of our entry-level 1U rack mount to below $6000. That's 2TB raw capacity. And we're not talking about stripped features - that's the No Limits Licensing we offer and enough hardware to do byte-level deduplication, incremental forever with synthetics, D2D2x archiving and DR, vaulting, and lots of other things.

What I'm the most excited about is that we now have a 9TB raw capacity system, the Recovery-813, at an incredibly aggressive price point. The reason that this is exciting is that we do a TON of customer surveys - and we find that in the SMB market there are an awful lot of people with 5TB to protect. This system can do that.  At a simply amazing price point.

5 Reasons to Implement a Managed IT Services Solution

Content by Managed Service Provider University

Managed ServicesInformation Technology services are essential to the success of every organization, large or small. With increasingly competitive business environments, CEOs and small business owners are under great pressure to maintain a highly qualified staff and to make sure their technology is obtaining a better ROI than their competitors'. These goals are not easily achieved, particularly for young or small businesses with less financial resources and time available. Having your own successful information technology department can eat up too much of the company's budget and time resources, and eventually cause a loss of its competitive edge.
